🎞️ Watch the latest Fair Rent Ontario Vignette -
@WNHHNetwork’s Marie McGregor Pitawanakwat on why Rent Control is an Indigenous Women, Girls, Two-Spirit, and Gender-Diverse Peoples Issue 🪶
🚨 We cannot achieve housing justice without enforcing treaties and honouring Indigenous sovereignty!
🪶Key Impacts:
🟣 Human Rights & Broken Treaties:
Indigenous people have a human right to housing, as recognized by the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). However, Canada’s failure to honour and enforce treaties has left this right unrealized, forcing 60% of Status Indian people to leave reserves and navigate a rental market rife with discrimination, racism, and stigma.
🔶 Systemic Barriers:
Indigenous women are disproportionately affected. They leave reserves for employment, education, healthcare, or to escape gender-based violence, only to face systemic barriers like landlord discrimination and unsafe housing conditions.
💬 Key Takeaway:
For thousands of years, Indigenous Peoples have lived on these lands, with treaty rights affirming their place here. Yet, broken treaties and systemic inequities force Indigenous renters into a market that prioritizes profits over people. This is not just a housing crisis—it’s a treaty and human rights crisis.
👉 Together with @WNHHNetwork we're advancing full rent control as a step toward ensuring stable homes and secure futures for everyone while continuing the fight for treaty enforcement for true housing justice.

Premier @fordnation has indicated his intention to proceed with trampling on the Charter rights of encampment residents through legislation that could expedite people into jails or involuntary treatment. Ultimately, this is about hiding Ford's absolute failure to build housing.

To be clear, this could mean involuntary treatment of homeless people in encampments. It could also mean automatic criminalization of people who have no choice but to live in public. It also looks like Ford will make shelter funding contingent on cities dismantling encampments.
