SIR PATRICK STEWART (1940-2026)
Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end. You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love.
We first met as ambitious young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago but we weren’t in the same productions. My first strong memory was a few years later, meeting him in the street in central London when he told me about an offer to take over a leading part in 'Star Trek'. “But Patrick think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to risk—getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?”. Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marvelled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes ('X-Men' of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in London’s West End and on Broadway.
America was his adopted home, where he met his adored Sunny who has cared for him through sickness and health, through thick and thin. But he never forsook his origins: and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire.
His farewell performance in 'Avengers: Doomsday' is yet to be seen.

Goodnight Sir Patrick Stewart 😔🙏🏾💐
Sir Patrick Stewart has left us, and the world is poorer for it. Beyond the monumental body of work he gave us across stage, film and television, there was that unforgettable night at the 2010 Glamour Awards when he put James Corden firmly in his place.
As host, Corden had been loitering at the back of the stage with his hands in his pockets, looking thoroughly bored while presenters and winners did their thing. Stewart, up to present an award, turned and addressed him directly:
“When the presenters are up here and when the recipients are receiving their awards, don’t stand at the back of the stage with your hands in your pockets, looking around as though you wished you were anywhere but here.”
Corden, clearly taken by surprise and not used to being spoken to like that, tried to hit back: “You couldn’t be more wrong, sir. You couldn’t be more wrong. If it looked like that, I’m so sorry, but when you come up and present an award, just fucking get on with it!”
Stewart wasn’t finished. He followed up with the line that really upset James: “From where I was sitting, I can see your belly, and that was right over there at the back of the room. These people down here…”
Corden’s ego clearly couldn’t take it. He got right in Stewart’s face, fuming: “Sorry, I’m waiting for the punchline. Go on? No, seriously, go on? You can see my belly… and we can all see you dying right now! Let’s go?”
He then stood there squirming, visibly uncomfortable and completely unused to being told off for his behaviour. Stewart closed it with: “If you fancy the Jonas Brothers, cover your belly.”
It was awkward by the end, with people in the room shouting for them to just get on with it. But Stewart had done the job. He called out the lack of professionalism and the visible disdain for the event, and Corden had no real answer beyond wounded pride.
Well done, Sir Patrick. Rest in peace. The world will miss you.
What!!?? 😳😳😔😔 Reading this has really caught me off guard! I had no idea he was suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia. I suppose his close family kept that private, for obvious reasons. Sad news to read. 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾

Walter Koenig has passed away.
Everyone got to show their comedy chops in Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, and Chekov asking for directions to the "Nuclear Wessels" and the interrogation scene are real highlights.
Koenig often cited The Voyage Home as his favourite Trek film.

If Jewish pupils are feeling upset when they see a Palestinian badge, the correct response is not to erase Palestine from schools--it's to educate those kids that a genocide is taking place and the correct moral position is to oppose it. Anything less is a dereliction of duty.

40 years since making The Color of Money.
I had the privilege as a young artist, to have a general meeting with Paul Newman and separately with Martin Scorsese years before making this film, where they shared some of their wisdom on cinema.
Of course, I’d seen their films, but prior to meeting them for the first time, I set up a personal study course where I would watch their films in sequence from the beginning of their careers, up until that point in time.
After being cast in The Color of Money, I once again studied all of their films in sequence.
Having studied their work, then being able to see firsthand these incredible artists, the towering legends of our field, at work on set, I was able to observe their practical application in every aspect of acting and filmmaking from their point of view.
I will always be grateful for this opportunity and for the generosity that Newman and Scorsese showed me with their knowledge of cinema and insight throughout the entire process.
To Marty, Paul, and the enormously talented cast and crew, it was a pleasure and an honor to be part of this film with you all! I have carried this experience and knowledge with me my entire career.

The guy who founded Nike owns a movie studio that's lost money for almost 20 years straight. In two weeks it's going to lose a whole lot more, and he genuinely does not care.
Phil Knight is worth around $35 billion. He bought a small animation shop in Portland, renamed it Laika, put $180 million in before it released a single frame, and handed it to his son Travis to run. Travis directed Wildwood himself.
The losses are wild when you line them up. Missing Link cost $102 million and made $26.6 million worldwide. It won the Golden Globe for best animated film anyway. Any normal studio shuts down after a miss that size. Laika went and spent the next seven years building a 140-minute PG-13 stop-motion epic, the longest and most expensive thing they've ever tried.
And stop motion is brutal work. Animators move puppets by hand, 24 frames for every second of film. A good week gets you a few seconds of usable footage. That's why a Laika movie costs $100 million while CGI studios make theirs for a fraction, and why nobody else in Hollywood will touch the format at this scale.
So what is Laika, really? A patron deal, the same setup that got the Sistine Chapel painted. The Medici never asked Michelangelo to hit quarterly numbers, and Knight isn't asking Wildwood to open at $40 million.
Here's the part I love. Every other animated movie this year had to survive a studio balance sheet to get made. Wildwood just had to convince one 88-year-old man in Oregon that American stop motion shouldn't die.
So when the opening number comes in and the internet calls it a bomb, keep in mind the only number that's ever mattered at Laika is whether Phil Knight is still writing checks.
Laika’s ’WILDWOOD’ is early tracking to earn only $6M-$10M on its domestic opening weekend.
• Budget was of around $100M
• One of the lowest openings for an animated film in 2026

📺 Saint & Greavsie (1990)
Shortly before Christmas 1990 Jimmy Greaves was too poorly to be on the show so his Spitting Image puppet voiced by the brilliant Football Commentator and impressionist Peter Brackley took his place. A now legendary clip. All 3 so sadly missed ⚽

I was thinking about this and it reminded me of a recent story the BBC did about a man called Asquith Xavier who was Britain's first black railway guard. He got that job after fighting policies that banned non-white people from working on the railway: bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cvg0…
