1/4 Excited to share that our paper "Phylogenetic inference with not-so-rare mutations and tiny organisms" has been accepted in Systematic Biology! 🧬🦠 @statsStAndrews @fwf

3/4 We compare a model that allows recurrent mutations with one that assumes only boundary mutations. We find that tree topologies are mostly unaffected, but branch lengths and estimates of mutation bias and selection can be distorted when recurrent mutations are ignored.
4/4 The main takeaway: for highly diverse organisms, accounting for recurrent mutations can be important for making reliable inferences about their evolutionary dynamics.
Very grateful to my coauthor @blJOg , the editors and everyone who contributed to this work!

The deliberate and relentless killing of Palestinian journalists is sickening beyond words — and is a desperate attempt to silence the truth about Israel’s ongoing crimes against humanity.
Shame on all those who empowered Israel to murder with impunity.

The idea that someone would “pose” as a journalist by doing live reporting all day, every day, for two straight years — but is actually secretly a terrorist (when??) — is so stupid it demonstrates how much power Israel believes it has. Their excuse for assassinating a world renowned journalist — and his entire crew! — doesn’t even have to make any sense for them to put it forward. It doesn’t matter what they say, they can kill with impunity and they know it.

Human rights group B'Tselem releases shocking video of Palestinian journalist Awdah Hathaleen filming his own murder at the hands of Israeli settler Yinon Levi.
As is usual in Israel, a judge quickly released Levi, even though the footage shows he shot Hathaleen in cold blood.

WOW. @Microsoft just open-sourced the code for one of "THE MOST" influential Paper of 2024 🔥
1-bit LLMs (e.g., BitNet b1.58).
Now you can run a 100B param models on local devices quantized with BitNet b1.58 on single CPU at 5-7 tokens/sec 🤯
The dream we have all been waiting for.
📊 Performance Improvements:
- Achieves speedups of 1.37x to 5.07x on ARM CPUs
- Larger models see greater performance gains
- Reduces energy consumption by 55.4% to 70.0% on ARM
- On x86 CPUs, speedups range from 2.37x to 6.17x

Eugenics is on the rise again, but it's important to learn from history. Take the Kallikak family, for example, a story often cited in early 20th-century eugenics to support harmful theories. 🧵 (1/3)
