When SCOTUS ruled in favor of parental rights in Mahmoud v. Taylor last year, it set precedent for religious opt-outs in schools nationwide. But a school district in California still hasn’t gotten the memo. More from @WSJ’s Editorial Board: wsj.com/opinion/a-new-lawsui…

Powerful op-ed by Pastor Ezra Jin of Zion Church yesterday in @WSJopinion (gift link in comment below) "My earnest prayer is that my release can mark the beginning of a new chapter for people of faith in China. Freedom of religion is a universal right promised in the Chinese Constitution. I hope that all our church members are freed and that China becomes a place where all people can freely worship..." - Pastor Ezra Jin

David Trimble, president of the nonprofit @RFInstitute, said keeping that ambassador slot unfilled "is detrimental to successful international religious freedom policy ... & "effective U.S. foreign policy.” “These are both good men and they both simply need to rise above the issues that may stem back to the primaries of North Carolina and move beyond those unfortunate things that transpired then," Trimble told me. nbcnews.com/politics/congres…

More on Quebec's aggressive secularization from @RFInstitute Senior Fellow Paul Marshall: "Until the 1960s, Quebec was the most religious part of North America. Now it is home to an aggressive secularist government that on Nov. 27 introduced a proposed law, Bill 9, that would outlaw public prayer.... [I]n a strikingly sectarian fashion that contradicts almost every religion in the world, [Quebec] thinks that religion is something confined to particular spaces at particular times." religionunplugged.com/news/q…
"Say a little prayer, but do it in private." Quebec is set to ban public prayer and religious garb in the name of "secularism." Muslims are upset. The editors of the Winnipeg Sun, dismissing freedom of worship as "nonsense," call the new law a "brave move" and a justified response to those who, especially post-October 7, have "shut down major highways to make a point." This is a classic overbreadth problem. If protesters are disrupting traffic, you prosecute traffic-disruption -- you don't ban public prayer. By contrast, our First Amendment tradition in the United States demands legislative means properly tailored to legitimate ends -- not the shotgun, "ban it all" approach of Canadian secularists. More broadly, our First Amendment reflects a counterintuitive idea that is actually borne out by lived experience and hard data: while religious differences tend to inflame societal divisions, religious freedom tends to defuse them. Quebec's militant secularism will only deepen religious conflict, not ameliorate it. "Say a little prayer" ... for our northern neighbors. They need it. winnipegsun.com/uncategorize…

On this International Day of #ReligiousFreedom, I think of the brave men and women believers of all faiths tortured by authoritarian regimes. Their suffering reminds us why we fight. But their courage gives us hope: freedom of religion will prevail. #IRFBA ohchr.org/sites/default/file…
