Excited to share my latest in Foreign Affairs. Deterrence can fail if rivals believe the US would respond somewhere but can't or that it could but won't. This has big implications for the ongoing debate about Ukraine aid and its impact on deterring China. foreignaffairs.com/china/ukr…

Why Congress Must Provide New Aid to Ukraine. 1/ THREAD There are many realpolitik arguments for continued aid to Ukraine. Real realists understand that U.S. military assistance to Ukraine directly serves our own national security interests.

The Majority Never Had It So Good Only just getting to read this fascinating @RussiaPost_tw piece on the impact of the war on Russia's 'provinces' and rural communities, and why it's not the nightmare some may presume. Depressing and thought-provoking russiapost.info/regions/majo…

Thoughts on naval conflict in the Ukraine War: Striking a ship at the pier is something anyone w/long-range precision weapons can do. This has been validated by attacks on the Russian LST Saratov and Ukrainian LST Yuriy Olefirenko. Major force flow & logistics implications. 1/5

Recent Sentinel images show the retaining wall of the 35th SRZ dry dock has been removed, which should allow the Kuznetsov to leave dry dock on 16-17 Feb as reported by TASS. This is good news for the Kuznetsov, but the Russian Navy’s problems are not yet solved. (1/7)

So although the RFN can celebrate completion of dry dock work on Kuznetsov, the bigger problem is maintenance and renovation of the fleet, of which the RFN has a long road ahead. (7/7)
