Though I was unable to make it to this event. I am PROUD to be one of the sponsors and a strong voice of advocacy. This might look like "small potatoes". It isn't. Diabetics suffer amputations... sometimes for lack of this essential care.
In the remarkable way that life comes around, I remember learning in nursing school that nurses could not do this care and I recall thinking that it needed to be changed.
When I teach my CNA class and I have to cover this topic, I usually comment on the fact that scope of practice must be maintained, but that it was far too limited for RNs.
And today, I was able to be part of that change. Better LAWS for better Care.
I will continue to raise my voice on patient and provider issues.
Legislation sponsored by Rep. Jennifer Boylan and @LoriUrsoRI to help homebound patients access routine foot care at home was ceremonially signed into law today.
“Most Rhode Islanders recognize the shortage of medical providers when they have trouble finding a primary care provider or have to wait months to see a specialist. But they may not recognize that for some residents, essential services are not available here in Rhode Island home settings. Home foot care services are one of these, leaving many older patients without safe options. It’s especially dangerous for those with diabetes, who are prone to infections and other foot problems that can lead to serious complications and even death,” said Representative Boylan (D-Dist. 66, Barrington, East Providence).
