Huge progress at RBG Kew's new plant growth facility, the Lansdown Research and Conservation Nursery at Wakehurst Place.
Excited to discover this morning what trees research ARIA is funding under its Accelerated Adaptation call: new RNAi fungicides against ash dieback from Cardiff, immunisation of oaks from Birmingham, seed priming of alder from Kew - and a project I am involved in, led by Rothamsted, to engineer early flowering in ash for rapid breeding programmes. This seems a highly innovative mix of high risk research.

"If each ash genome is the same movie, these findings highlight how many director’s cuts, extended editions, deleted scenes and alternate endings nevertheless exist in wild populations."

Interesting conundrum: how do trees grow faster and show greater drought resilience outside their native range, in an environment where they have had no time to evolve?
