Never mind, I found it

I lost my Dad on 9/11. I don’t get a lot of reach on here. But I just wanted to share a picture. He was 39. I thought he was old. I’m now in my mid 30s and I still feel like a kid. He was a great trader. He loved markets. He loved to find a stock no one was talking about. The first trade I ever placed was on his work computer, where he let me click the button to buy AMAT. I loved going to the office with him. It was electric. He was the best dad. We spent hours out in the street after dinner where he’d throw “pop flys” for me to catch. Eye on the ball. He loved watching Sponge Bob and eating cereal, wrestling with us in the living room. He just loved being around his kids so much, and we knew it. I’m so grateful I got a dad like that. Love you, Pops.

Why not gather those who DO see a problem (like all the people liking this thread) into new schools/departments/disciplines that offer a reformed alternative and see how that shapes up? Why not even help them shape the reformed alternative?
Replying to @Tyler_A_Harper
If we trust the disciplines to reform themselves, reform will not happen because people like the interviewee—denialists who think there is no problem and they’ve done nothing wrong—are the reformers. If admins step in and dictate the reform, academic freedom is functionally dead.

Nobody reads, and nobody drinks, and nobody has kids anymore, but on the other hand everyone is miserable now.
New newsletter: THE END OF BOOZE I like wine and cocktails. I also really like being alive. So I’m very motivated to understand the empirical relationship between moderate drinking and lifetime mortality. Fear of moderate drinking is surging among young people and some health influencers. No one should delude themselves into thinking alcohol is medicine. But the evidence that <8 drinks a week is a known danger has been dramatically oversold by health influencers. It is often based on mis-reading research conclusions and over-interpreting bad research with embarrassingly confidence intervals. open.substack.com/pub/derekt…

No. This conflates the spread of common schools (1830s-1870s), and the push to make schooling compulsory (1870s-1910s), which were different efforts in most places. The latter did have anti-Catholic motives, as well as anti-anything else that compulsion reformers disliked.
Ben Sasse has always been honest, but facing a terminal diagnosis he has been unplugged. Last night, in exactly 13 seconds, he explained the real reason compulsory education ever started in America. Catholics, consider this when making choices about education for your children.

Not a week goes by that I don't think about the first sentence of James Redfield's Nature and Culture in the Iliad. A great teacher and a true mensch — the Committee on Social Thought has lost one of its finest. He will be dearly missed.
Farewell, James Redfield. A singular voice in 20th century classical studies, an inimitable teacher, and a very funny guy. Chair of the Committee on Social Thought at the age of 34. Still teaching well into his 80s. He has died at 91. share.google/2GAw3LhiZyURB1e…

This isn’t an anti-woke or a pro-conservative assessment of a new set of programs at American universities - it’s an honest examination of the way the earth is shifting in higher education. Nobody knows where it’s headed.Highly recommended- by Pamela Paul wsj.com/us-news/education/ci…
