See you all in Montreal tomorrow! 🚀
Özgür Şimşek will complete our fantastic lineup of invited speakers. Özgür is a professor of AI at the University of Bath. She has worked on topics in ML ranging from bounded rationality to hierarchical action abstractions, 🧵
drawing from a strong multi-disciplinary background that encompasses computer science, engineering, operational research, and psychology.
RL has been highly effective in settings where the possibilities can be simulated or laid out in advance. Our world is less tidy, continually bubbling up situations nobody could reasonably anticipate,
and handling such situations with grace is an important facet of general intelligence. This talk argues that such uncertainty — what economists call Knightian uncertainty, or unknown unknowns — may sit outside RL's formalisms.
Our next speaker, Joel Lehman, will ask "Does RL have a blind spot for Knightian uncertainty?" Joel is a principal research scientist @LilaSciences & senior research associate @ Univ. of Oxford’s Human-Centered AI Lab ✨ abstract in 🧵
Introducing our next speaker, Serena Booth. Serena is a CS faculty member at Brown, and was previously an AAAS AI Policy Fellow with the U.S. Senate. Serena designs methods for people to specify, model, inspect, and revise AI behaviors. Cont. in 🧵
Finding the Frame is coming up in just a couple of weeks! Our program starts with some exciting invited talks. Professor Sara Aronowitz (U Toronto) will be speaking on Sequences of Frames: The Analogy with Memory Retrieval. Abstract in 🧵
But in many cases, it seems like framing (and re-framing) is done in a way that overlaps with first-order planning, both in time and even in terms of processing.
