Really important read this
In this piece, Ismail Abukar provides in-depth details on how Somalia’s elective political positions, from parliamentary seats right up to the presidency, are sold and bought by a select few, rather than be subjected to the will of the people.

Somalia’s parliamentary seats are auctioned before the vote.
275 seats. 275 simultaneous, separate auctions. Each seat has its own pool of delegates, its own clan elder who builds the list, and its own money. On the most contested seats, one delegate’s vote can cost up to $30,000.
The method repeats: an invitation, a dinner, a hotel, an oath on the Quran. A former delegate, speaking anonymously, described what came next: “After that, you are not a delegate anymore. You are a captive.”
I interviewed more than a dozen delegates, candidates and clan elders across the 2016–2017 and 2021–2022 cycles. Then I followed the market upward. The parliament it produces goes on to elect the president.

Training for Kenyan police officers has historically emphasised brute force over de-escalation and community engagement. Despite various reforms, a culture of impunity and lack of accountability continue to plague the force. Functionalist theory underscores the vital role of social institutions, such as the police, in upholding social order. However, this perspective often neglects the potential for these institutions to become dysfunctional.

Campism is a mess.
Against the backdrop of a neoliberal order, in which resource extraction, sovereignty, labour, ownership and other economic questions continue to be depoliticised, Nishant Upadhyay asserts that developments in Burkina Faso have instead facilitated a repoliticisation of political economy, including everyday life, through mass mobilisation.

Examining the rise of LGBTphobia across West Africa, I ask: if both civilian and military regimes, each espousing a commitment to Pan-Africanism, are converging around similar forms of repression, what explains this trend?
Find out in my latest long read for @ROAPEjournal 👇🏿
In this long read, Malick Doucouré argues that the recent anti-LGBT crackdowns in new pro-Pan-African government like Burkina Faso, Senegal & beyond are really about elites manufacturing unity against a fake external threat to absolve their failure to fix a stalling economy. He argues it's time to reclaim the forgotten, inclusive Pan-Africanism of Nkrumah & Sankara.
