From September 19 to 21, I met individually in New York with four candidates for the next UN Secretary-General—Rebeca Grynspan(@RGrynspan), Secretary-General of UNCTAD; Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, Permanent Representative of Guyana to the UN; María Fernanda Espinosa(@mfespinosaEC), former President of the UN General Assembly; and Rafael Grossi(@rafaelmgrossi), Director General of the IAEA.
We agreed on the need to strengthen UN-centered multilateralism and reform the UN into a more effective and accountable organization to address global challenges, including protracted armed conflicts. The candidates underscored Korea’s important role in building Member State support for UN reform.
Leadership from the next UN Secretary-General is more critical than ever. Following the “Dialogue with Candidates for UN Secretary-General” held at the Jeju Forum in June, Korea will continue to contribute, as a responsible global power, to a transparent and inclusive selection process.
