Four early coin portraits of Alexander the Great in my collection issued by his generals Ptolemy & Lysimachus after his death. Probably earlier than any surviving sculptural or painted portrait of him. What do you think they are worth?

Moreover, the French aversion to risk means that French people provide little funding to businesses (few hold stocks) and even less to start-ups. The savings of wealthy French individuals primarily go into real estate or life insurance, much of which is used to finance the French state and help cover its persistent budgetary shortfalls. As a result, French savings are not effectively channeled into boosting economic activity and creating jobs.

Where did the ancient Greeks fight, whom did they fight, and who won? I mapped all 713 recorded land and sea battles of the Greek city-states and kingdoms, from c. 700 BCE to the last Greek kingdoms. In this thread: the places, the record of every state and the full list. 1/

#RomanFortThursday – The Roman auxiliary fort at Gračine, near Ljubuški in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Established during the early Roman imperial period, the fort formed part of the Roman military presence in the province of Dalmatia and helped secure the region around the important Roman colony of Narona. Inscriptions and stamped roof tiles attest to the presence of several military units, including Cohors I Belgarum, Cohors VIII Voluntariorum, and detachments of Legio VIII Augusta and Legio IV Flavia Felix. The fort has traditionally been identified with Bigeste, a Roman road station mentioned in ancient itineraries, although its precise location remains debated. The excavated remains include substantial stone foundations, rooms equipped with hypocaust heating systems, and buildings that recent research suggests may have formed part of the military headquarters (principia) and commander's residence (praetorium). Excavations in 2023–2024 uncovered the fort's northern gateway, flanked by two square defensive towers. These newly exposed structures are quite distinct from the older excavated buildings. The fort was occupied from the early 1st century AD until around the end of the 2nd or beginning of the 3rd century.

Speaking of Saint Augustine and lions 👇 “He endured death as a lamb, he devoured it as a lion. Who is this lamb and lion? Gentle and strong, lovable and terrifying, innocent and powerful, silent when judged, roaring when to judge. … A lamb in suffering, a lion in resurrection.” - Saint Augustine

#ReliefWednesday – A remarkable Roman cult relief depicting Minerva, Jupiter and a Genius, probably the Genius loci (protective spirit of the place), from Šipovo in Roman Dalmatia, dating to the 3rd century AD. Minerva stands on the left, wearing a helmet and carrying a shield and spear. At the centre, Jupiter holds a thunderbolt and an eagle-topped sceptre, while the partially preserved Genius on the right pours a libation onto an altar. The relief probably belonged to a local temple. 📍 National Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Sarajevo.
