De Nederlandse #MIVD zou in 2017-2018 real-time hebben meegekeken op de iPhone van Jared Kushner en hem hebben zien inloggen op een Dubai-rekening met honderden miljoenen dollars via Azerbeidzjan. Dat beweert Matthew Cole in een Vanity Fair-excerpt van zijn boek Princes and Thieves. Via een overgelopen Russische GRU-hacker en reverse-engineering van een iPhone X-kwetsbaarheid zouden er in Den-Haag schermbeelden zijn vastgelegd. Kushner noemt het “completely insane” en categorisch onwaar; er zijn geen bankafschriften, geen transacties en geen Nederlandse bevestiging.
Dit is niet de eerste keer dat de Nederlandse diensten een sleutelrol spelen. De @AIVD #COZYBEAR onthulling en de 2016-hacks op de Democraten leidde tot het wereldwijde bredere Trump Russia-gate-narratief. De Volkskrant, de NOS en politiek bliezen het AIVD rapport op tot collusie en ondermijning van de democratie zonder af te wachten op later bewijs, nuances of correcties. Zoals gebruikelijk bij dergelijk goed getimede scoops, dit bewijs kwam nooit. Sterker, het tegendeel werd eind 2019 onomstotelijk vastgesteld.
Het Nederlandse dossier kreeg een eigen leven en diende destijds als politiek wapen. Nu herhaalt het patroon zich: een onbevestigd verhaal over Russische spionnen die Trump’s schoonzoon bij miljardenstromen zouden hebben gezien, perfect getimed om de Amerikaanse midterms te beïnvloeden via een anti-Trump-frame. Zonder hard bewijs blijft het een claim van één auteur met anonieme bronnen. Linkse poortwachters die destijds CozyBear instrumentaliseerden, hebben hier dezelfde prikkel.
De MIVD (destijds onder Onno Eichelsheim) verdient serieuze verificatie, geen anonieme boekclaims die als verkiezingsmunitie worden gebruikt. Nederland als bron van een “hack” op de Amerikaanse democratie zonder bewijs is een herhaling van zetten.
