I think Alberta's provincial government will introduce legislation that limits municipal zoning control over data centre development, and many people who cheered on that intervention for infill housing will call it an assault on local democracy
No NIMBYhas been able to explain exactly how many units of housing these existing empty lots can hold. The side effect of constraining density like these creates larger and more intense developments than just allowing 8plexes everywhere.
It all comes down to no density anywhere.

Brags about "saving" $40M in dt office conversions.👇
K Cllr, time for big boy pants. 4 new suburbs are part of Nov budget deliberations. They need $377 million for infrastructure. 9X your "savings".
Will you kill this too, or just admit you don't care what sprawl costs? #yyccc
Fiscal restraint isn't saying no to everything. It's saying yes to the right things.
✅ $630.8M for water infrastructure: YES
✅ $51M for the Nose Creek sanitary trunk: YES
✅ New fire engine, trainers and mechanics: YES
❌ $40M downtown office conversions: voted YES to end it. Lost 6–9
❌ 0% tax freeze: voted YES for it. Defeated 5–10
❌ 2.4% admin cut: voted YES for it. Defeated 5–10
Some needs got unanimous support. The cuts to wants did not.
Pipes and safety come first. The 2027 budget is the chance to put core services first.

"Spreading tax dollars thin across more lanes"
You mean you finally recognize taxpayers are on the hook for the thousands and thousands of kilometers of lanes of roads we keep building in this city!?
Well there's progress, councillor! #yyccc

Nobody who's traveled, even via aerial maps, needs to be told that this is the USA🇺🇸.
1. Freeway walling off river.
2. Vast freeway interchange maximizing waste of valuable urban land.
3. Extensive surface parking.
I know this city, but it's also almost every US city.

The infill-parking circular logic.

ALT Infographic titled "The 'responsible infill' doom loop" from Grow Together Edmonton. A circular flow of four boxes, linked by green arrows labeled "because," runs clockwise: "We can't build infill here" because "Parking! Traffic!" because "Everyone drives everywhere" because "Everything is far away" because "We can't build infill here," which closes the loop. In the center, a facepalm emoji.

➡️ Połączenie europejskich stolic i największych ośrodków gospodarczych siecią szybkiej kolei.
➡️ Budowa nowych połączeń transgranicznych i skrócenie czasu podróży.
➡️ Rozszerzenie sieci na regiony dotychczas pozbawione kolei dużych prędkości.
➡️ Zwiększenie finansowania inwestycji w budżecie UE na lata 2028–2034.
Celem jest stworzenie zintegrowanej europejskiej sieci kolejowej, która zwiększy mobilność mieszkańców i konkurencyjność gospodarczą UE.

The secret to housing more people is Mid-rise, high-density mixed used neighbourhoods that can house millions, cut commute times, create commercial vibrancy while being walkable cities.
Cities need density, not ego-driven skylines. So built smart & not just tall

Apartment living is more popular in countries with a culture of building HOUSE-LIKE apartments.
A house has a front and back. An exterior wall facing the public street (busy! exciting! public!) and an exterior wall facing the backyard (quiet, green, safe).
Apartments can have a front and a back, too, with point access designs.

This small Swiss station that serves 11 houses at the base of a mountain (4500 ft elevation) sees more trains daily than the entire state of Kentucky sees in a week.
Personal vehicles are very inefficient at moving large amounts of people. Also, this part of highway is under provincial jurisdiction and owned by the province.

So much "pedestrian infrastructure" is actually auto infrastructure in disguise.
Even in Manhattan we force pedestrians to climb flights of stairs just to keep car traffic moving uninterrupted on the Harlem River Drive.

BREAKING: America’s $1.7 trillion auto loan market is headed for a crash, per Reuters.
Auto loans are now one of the biggest sources of household debt, bigger than credit cards.
And the strain is showing: 1 in 5 Americans is behind on at least one loan, the highest since 2010, and the average car on the road is now nearly 13 years old, a record.

Fareless transit doesn't redistribute wealth from the rich to the working class.
It redistributes transit's inherently finite operating budget away from running service.
