💛OCTOBER 24, 1966: DONOVAN TURNS THE WORLD MELLOW! Scottish singer-songwriter Donovan released “Mellow Yellow” in the United States, bringing his playful psychedelic folk sound to a growing audience fascinated by the new British music scene. Here’s a little-known Beatles connection: Paul McCartney contributed backing vocals to the recording, although the song’s famous phrase about being “mellow” and its supposed connection to a banana-related fad have generated plenty of myths over the years. The single eventually climbed to No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Donovan was proof that the British musical wave was expanding beyond beat groups into folk, psychedelia, and studio experimentation.
