Bob Costas was 18 when his father dropped dead at JFK airport. At the wake, a man handed him a thick envelope with $6,000 in $100 bills. It was everything his father left behind, and a bookie would never have paid it to a dead man.
In the video below, he tells the story himself.
His father, John, was a big-time gambler. Not casinos, not racetracks. Ball games. Bob says the mortgage was literally riding on his bets.
When the games went the wrong way, he threw things, cursed and yelled. Bob’s mom and sister would leave. Bob stayed, because watching the games with his dad was the only way to be close to him.
Friday, May 15, 1970. A cop knocks on the door. Before he says a word, Bob’s mother asks, “My husband’s dead, isn’t he?” John Costas had a heart attack walking through JFK. He was 42.
At the wake, one of his gambling buddies walked in with the envelope. “Your father was up when he died. Give this to your mother.” A bookie never pays a dead man, so the friend went to the bookie himself and said John sent him to collect.
Decades later, Bob Costas refused to read sports betting ads on air. Today the bookie lives in everyone’s phone. Is that progress?
NIL was NOT done to create parity
The NIL did two things to the SEC.
1. It neutered their bell cow. An Alabama Saban dynasty may never exist again. The days of selective privateer finance are over. Nick understood that
2. It redistributed talent. With the bell cows gone, more cows can eat at the same trough.
The losses you see aren’t because the league is somehow “greater.” It’s that NIL did what it was designed to do. Create parity.
So next time you see talking heads say it’s an sec thing, kindly remind them it’s an NIL thing.
Nothing more nothing less.

Love watching the chats of bettors/traders saying “it’s so rigged.”
As David Stern once said to me.
“Are they aware that they are accusing us of a federal crime? If we really rigged these games, we’d be nailed for conspiracy and racketeering.”

After the loss yesterday, Najee Harris expressed frustration with the Giants' running back usage approach:
"It's hard to get into a rhythm with one or two plays...if you're getting a play here and then get taken out for a series, there's nothing you could do. I've never been through none of this before."
John Harbaugh on Harris' comments:
"Our run game hasn't earned that yet, none of those guys have. My advice would be, do the most you can with the opportunities you get. Make the most of your opportunities and you're sure to get more. Do something. I get it, you want to get out there and get a rhythm, but that rhythm is earned, too. And that hasn't happened yet. I know he understands that."

Ryan French reveals Aaron Rodgers often sends money to support struggling professional golfers, and says when Rodgers learns about an aspiring golfer who can't afford to continue competing for whatever reason, he'll privately reach out to ask whether the person is deserving of help, and if so he'll send money through Venmo or donate anonymously through GoFundMe
“Yeah, probably Aaron Rodgers. Aaron has been super good behind the scenes to me. We were just talking about it before we started, but I had streamed the Scottsdale Open, which I think was the only sporting event going on in the world at the time. And you could see who came in to watch your stream, and it said Aaron Rodgers. And I was just like, ‘Oh, it’s a fake account.’”
“And then maybe a couple weeks later, he messaged me, and I was like, ‘What the hell is happening?’ And so he’s been super nice. He wants to keep this on the down low, so now I’m going to tell it on the podcast. But I would put out, I’ve tried my best to help players if they get their car stolen or they need money, whatever.”
“And he’d just message me and be like, ‘Hey, is this a good dude or a good player?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah.’ And he would either Venmo me money, and then I would Venmo the player, or he would do it anonymously on GoFundMe.”
“And yeah, he’s been amazingly awesome. He’s helped my foundation a few times. He’s just, again, public persona and private, think what you want about Aaron, but my experience with him has been nothing but amazing.”

If I ruled the world, I would eliminate football celebrations after touchdowns, field goals, extra points, first downs, sacks and receptions.
I’d allow the winning team to celebrate. Period.
