"We don’t know what we believe until someone challenges our beliefs."
David Brooks
A useful habit before any performance coaching conversation: ask what we contributed to the problem. Naming our part first doesn't let anyone off the hook, and it usually makes the rest of the conversation easier to hear.
Before I ask someone on my team to change, I need to own my part. That doesn't remove their responsibility, it just means I'm willing to practice what I'm asking of them.

Mastering these five skills will prepare you to manage teams both large and small. s.hbr.org/417m8NT
This applies to managers learning to coach too. The first coaching conversations where you ask instead of tell feel slow and awkward. That's usually a sign the skill is being built, not that it isn't working.

Managers, your team switches off in meetings for three reasons and you're probably doing all of them. #leadership

Coaching is about asking and listening, not telling and selling. s.hbr.org/47L4ROb
Easy to agree with, hard to do mid conversation. In coaching conversations, the urge to be right often shows up as finishing the other person's sentence. Letting them land the thought first is a small, practical start.
We are here on earth to make a positive difference, not to prove we are right.
Peter Drucker taught me this lesson many years ago and it changed my life.
Too often our communication is driven by a need to prove how smart we are or how right we are. But ask yourself: What’s the point?
Before speaking, pause and reflect: Why am I saying this? If your honest answer is, “Because I believe it will make a positive difference,” then go ahead and say it. If not, the best choice may be to 'shut up' and say nothing.
This simple filter has saved me time, reduced unnecessary conflict, and made my conversations far more meaningful.
If this reminder helps you even once, it will have been a good use of my time and energy.
Life is good.

The minutes test is a good one, and hard to run from memory once the conversation is over. That's why we're building our new app, ReCoachIt: it records coaching conversations while they happen, then gives the coach a score and actionable feedback. recoachit.com
When did someone last give you feedback on how you coach?
Not on results. On the coaching conversation itself.
ReCoachIt records it while it happens, then scores the coach and gives actionable feedback.

The 1:1 is often the one piece of their job that never gets reviewed. It's private, it's unrecorded, and by Friday it only exists as memory.
