[5]Our data have been instrumental in detecting trends early like the emergence & takeover of new variants.
We tracked the replacement of wt with Alpha, Delta with Omicron, then BA.1 with BA.2.
We detected a small number of Omicron recombinants in our latest data (5 XE & 3 XL).
[4]“These trends are concerning since when a very high number of people are infected, this may lead to more people becoming seriously ill and needing to go to hospital.
“Although restrictions have ended, I would urge people to still behave cautiously." - Prof Paul Elliott
[3] Our data show that infections have risen in all age groups and remain highest in primary school-aged children, with almost 1 in 10 (8.81%) 5-11-year-olds testing positive.
However infections were falling or flattening in younger age groups while increasing in those aged 55+.
[2] We found that 6.37% of the population in England was infected in March.
This is more than double our previous findings when 1 in 35 had the virus in Feb and 40% higher than the first Omicron peak in Jan.

"The REACT Programme has become one of the world’s biggest studies of community COVID-19 testing and has been instrumental in tracking the progress of the epidemic - I know this study has been an invaluable source of data for policy makers all over the world." - Sir Tony Blair
