I think the fun thing about Clayfaceโs critical and audience performance is that it really does leave room for any and all opinions towards the film without one having to overshadow the other. Iโve seen people say that Clayface is better than Joker 1. Iโve seen people say that itโs just okay. Iโve seen people say that itโs a major letdown. There is no correct opinion, and the only definitively wrong one is that itโs DCโs Morbius.
I like that tbh, it reminds me of when we could just watch a movie and form our own opinion without someone having to whisper in our ear how popular or unpopular that opinion is. If you said back in June that you actually really liked Supergirl and believe itโs a great film, youโd have several people telling you how bad of an opinion that is solely because it doesnโt match the masses. Thatโs not really the case here, and I really appreciate that. Thatโs my kind of cinema.

Since I drew the two closely together
Here are my Superman and Lois
Waitโฆ.
Yโall was being dead serious blaming Matt Reeves for no Batman in the DCU???๐ญ
The guy who made a masterpiece Batman movie that we were all wanting a sequel to?? And has been cooking from all weโve heard? Thatโs yโall target right now??
Why not just blameโฆ idkโฆ JAMES GUNN???๐ญ
Nobody told Gunn or Safran that they canโt have two Batman movies in production at the same time. Thats just James Gunn respecting Reeves wishes and wanting to give him space at the cost of his own Batman.
I am extremely excited for DCU Batman and I think that character has great potential to be the most definitive Batman ever, but yโall are wylin blaming Reeves as if he told James Gunn he canโt make a Batman movie๐ญ๐ญ๐ญ
To be entirely fairโฆโฆโฆโฆ
When youโre defending peak, you kinda have the right to be a little toxicโฆ.

This week has been mental, but finally will be able to catch up with #CLAYFACE tonight!
Nice to see my fave Dolby will be packed despite being a SUN night session.
I usually donโt enjoy seeing horror in theatres on SUN because itโs usually less crowded, so itโs a nice surprise ๐ฅ

CLAYFACE opened to $43M at the global box office, including $24.5M domestically.
Holding a $35M budget and 94% audience score on RT, itโs tracking to be the third most profitable DC movie this decade, after THE BATMAN and SUPERMAN.

Funny thing is in an ideal truly 10/10 Clayface movie? This character wouldโve just been Bruce Wayne Batman ๐ญ
Iโm starting to think yโall are intentionally being dull.
Iโm not saying the character himself should be Batman, but he serves nearly the exact same narrative purpose Batman would in this story and has served in The Feat of Clay. Heโs the outsider detective investigating Clayfaceโs trail of murders, which is what the character of John is doing here.
The only unique thing John offers to this story is that heโs perceived as an obstacle between Mat and Caitlyn, and that couldโve still happened had he just had literally any other occupation and left the detective work to Batman.
In my opinion, atleast.
Landing in the top 10 with only 4 episodes at the time is not โvery poorlyโ, especially when your numbers increase weekly every episode.
Superman released off the heels of 10 years of bad DCEU movies and a tarnished legacy where the last 8 movies couldnโt even crack 400M. Leaving the box office with 600M and pulling off the PVOD numbers it did IS absolutely still a success.
Clayface is a low budget low marketed horror film about a C List character and has been received extremely well by audiences both in the superhero and horror realm. Nobody expected it to make 800M.
And, yes. Supergirl was a poorly received movie. Every franchise has a poorly received movie. The Incredible Hulk, the MCUโs second outing, was a poorly received movie.
The issue with your argument is that it lacks both nuance and context. The DCU doesnโt exist in the early 2000s or 90s where a movie will be an immediate smash hit if it has a superhero in it. It exists in the 2020s where itโs more common for a superhero IP film to flop than it is to make billions.
The issue isnโt you saying that DC has untapped potential. The issue is you believing that DC copying Marvel will help them tap into that potential.
