🚫 Drug use is dangerous and every overdose has the potential to cause a brain injury.
The Alberta Recovery Model recognizes that a system of care must do more than reverse an overdose. It must help prevent the next one.
The International Society of Addiction Medicine Congress was held from October 1 to 3, 2026 in the Netherlands.
As a result of Alberta’s innovations in addiction treatment, CoRE had several speaking opportunities:
🎤 Dr. Dan Devoe spoke to supervised consumption, service withdrawal, and low-barrier pharmacotherapy and explored where we go from here in helping people recover.
🎤 Dr. Stryder Zobell discussed the outcomes of a new research study on the rapid induction of Extended-release Buprenorphine and how a novel approach to using it is helping engage high risk population in recovery.

📰 New research by CoRE suggests people with opioid use disorder (OUD) can be started on Sublocade® or similar (LAIB) without first completing the normal stabilization period.
⬇️ Even with participants actively using illicit fentanyl in a shelter-based setting, the monthly overdose rate decreased by 91% after LAIB initiation.
💊 Traditional stabilization requirements can delay treatment, particularly for people facing homelessness or who have other barriers to care. While additional studies are needed to confirm these findings, this approach could be key to helping more people access addiction treatment when they need it.
