ALT The backstory to how I named this one... As I struggled to title this image I focused on a feeling that the cottonwoods were huddled against encroaching darkness, gathering in every last bit of light before it was gone. Taken in Ahwahnee Meadow, I contemplated the plight of the natives that were ousted from the valley after its discovery by white miners in the mid-nineteenth century, and how the Ahwanechee repeatedly sought to return to their home until they were nearly wiped out by a neighboring tribe, with whom they had taken refuge but also stole horses from to make the journey back to the valley once again. Per Wikipedia: "Hiraeth is a Welsh concept of longing for home. 'Hiraeth' is a word which cannot be completely translated, meaning more than solely "missing something" or "missing home." It implies the meaning of missing a time, an era, or a person - including homesickness for what may not exist any longer."
