I chatted with @MSNBC about the safety of mifepristone+self-managed abortion. I trust my patients to decide if, when, and how they will start their families, and I trust you, too. We get to decide what we need. Not the courts. Not lawmakers. And not anti-abortion extremists.

So many folks I deeply admire and respect spoke today including Dr. @thewonderseeker who shared her own story about access for herself and her patients.

There is no medical or scientific reason to require a prescription for oral contraception, including progesterone only pills. Decades of research shows they are safe and effective. It was my honor to represent my patients, community and @prhdocs at today's hearing. #FreeThePill

We also heard several witnesses express feigned “concern” about this legislation “protecting” rapists and abusers. Let’s be clear, carceral approaches have NEVER stopped rape or sexual abuse.

Despite the FALSE claims and FEIGNED concerns about the safety of people who are self managing their abortion, the real risk is not medical, it's legal. People have been interrogated, arrested and jailed for suspicion of self managing their abortion. #criminalizationisnotcare

Let me clearly say that illegal does not equal unsafe. People have been safely managing their abortions for centuries without medical supervision. We can both honor those who were impacted by unsafe abortion and acknowledge that self managed abortion today looks very different.

I want to take a moment though to correct some misinformation (and outright lies) we heard from a number of witness, none of whom are health care providers or experts in abortion care, by the way. My face says it all but here's a 🧵....
