Teachers, want your say? Let us know what your experience is by doing this short survey.
It’s 2 years on from the first lockdown. Where are we now with the broader social, emotional and relational needs of students and staff that underpin learning and wellbeing?

What sits outside stays outside. It’s important we build bridges rather than barriers...

Yep 💯 - its so hugely context based, & some schools will need much more rigid approaches than others, & also some children. One thing that I remember coming out of the report was children with very high levels of need & dysregulation really couldn’t cope with RP initially....

Definitely accountability pressure - things like off rolling come into this, a practice which would be much less commonplace if accountability and the marketisation of education wasn’t such a pressing issue for schools

💯 - making people say sorry is definitely not RP! A genuine apology can only result from a process of self reflection and perspective taking to create an empathic light bulb moment, which ultimately is what RP is all about

Great engagement from the restorative sector today - many thanks to @RJWorking for their fascinating responses. #Restorative_Ed check out their blog at restorativejustice.org.uk/bl…

Especially when schools could be teaching #restorative language principles and confidence. To #BuildBackBetter for collective wellbeing, education should prioritise relationships and promote new kinds of learning for the most important challenges of our time. (3)

We have seen all schools struggle and we should recognise school staff as heroes who are carrying the nation while coping with disruptions and intense uncertainties. We also know that covid-19 is increasing economic inequality, causing other painful pressures on families. (1)

We need to empower young people to lead social justice development as part of their daily experience, not as an add-on ‘when this is all over’ – which it may never be.
YP of this generation have a precarious future, it would betray their needs to enable division and enmity. (2)

This is exactly the problem. So we must keep talking about quality, not only ‘between ourselves’ but to get it across to the education sector that this is not just about “making people say sorry”. We think it vital that the @RJCouncil clarifies its Quality Mark for schools asap.

I also think RP/RJ done badly weakens the restorative movement as a whole - it provides ammunition for proponents of zero tolerance who see RP as being an ineffective mechanism for changing behaviour by letting poor behaviour pass unchallenged.

These teachers empower their students to lead social justice changes in their school communities, and some headteachers are supporting that change strategically @CashCornwall @theplacetolearn @cleyshon (3)
