Military leaders pre-empting political leaders - softening the ground, so to speak - about 'sacrifices' necessary to bolster militarism. Be prepared for more taxes, less social benefits and - perhaps - the idea that war is inevitable, not preventable.

Frankly, there is some deeply disturbing rhetoric coming out of British top brass this week about 'consenting to sacrifices' and 'take the fight to the enemy'. It seems they are moving to take control of the political 'conversation' on our security, and that is not a good thing.

Exhibit B: The CDS's bizarre tweet from yesterday, attempting to link an annual infantry exercise in mid-Wales to a national, all-of-society responsibility to prepare for and respond to unspecified 'challenges ahead'. xitter.cf/UKCDS_MOD/status/21106…

The British military wastes billions every year sustaining overseas operations. We don’t need more military spending. We need a new foreign policy. Our latest report @TransitionSec estimates the costs of Britain’s global military strategy and its overseas deployments.
NEW: Keir Starmer declared last year that the “peace dividend” was over, promoting the myth that Britain’s military spending has declined since the end of the Cold War.   Our latest report shows this simply isn’t true. 🧵

Useful PQ and answer on the 'national conversation campaign on defence and security' that we're supposedly having. But we repeat - a conversation is not a campaign; it involves listening at least as much as telling. HMG needs to hear from people and understand their (in)security.
