Detroit is mourning Grace Nolan. She was a 25-year-old medical student who placed fourth in last year's Detroit Free Press Marathon, her first marathon. She was killed in a car crash early on race morning, Oct 18, and was set to lead this year's women's elite field.

The Tokyo Legacy Half grew 23%. It had 17,414 finishers, up from 14,167, and both course records fell. Agnes Ngetich ran 1:04:23, and Kazuna Kanetomo was the top Japanese woman in 1:10:17

Typhoon No. 30 has wiped out 3 island marathons in Japan. Sunday's 38th Kumejima Marathon in Okinawa was called off today. So were the Tokara Islands island-hopping marathon, which had about 140 runners, and the Iheya Moonlight Marathon on the 24th. Olympian Yuma Hattori is attempting a comeback. The Tokyo 2020 marathoner ran 1:01:49 at the Tokyo Legacy Half and is now logging 800–900 km a month. He's aiming to beat his 2:07:27 best at Fukuoka in December and to earn a qualifying spot for LA 2028

Richard Ringer is running Frankfurt for his daughter. The 2022 European champion races Sunday, the day after the first anniversary of his daughter April's stillbirth. "She will definitely be there," he told dpa.

Frankfurt has the fastest men's field in its history for Sunday. For the first time, four men in the field have run under 2:05: Amanal Petros (2:04:03), Andualem Belay (2:04:44), Samuel Fitwi (2:04:45) and Richard Ringer (2:04:47). Three of them are German.

On the women's side, 2018 champion Meskerem Assefa is in now that her visa came through. Zeineba Yimer (2:18:47) and Betsy Saina (2:19:17) lead the women, and Buzunesh Getachew is out injured

A "certified" course has been officially measured, usually with a calibrated bike wheel, so it's confirmed to be at least 26.2 miles. "Sanctioned" means the event itself is registered with USATF. That comes with a fee and insurance, plus USATF rules for officials, timing, etc.

Baystate's two Trials qualifiers won't count. Spencer Friske won the Oct 18 race in Lowell, Mass. in 2:15:04, under the 2:16 standard, and Caitlin McGinley ran 2:36:08, under 2:37. The course was USATF-certified, but the race wasn't USATF-sanctioned, so the times don't count.

For a time to count as an Olympic Trials qualifier, both are required. So Baystate's course was the right length, but the race wasn't a USATF-sanctioned event, and Friske's and McGinley's times can't count even though they're real.

Most mid-size races get certified and skip sanctioning because it costs extra and barely matters to everyday runners. That's why a slip like this usually only comes to light when someone runs a Trials-level time.

The race director has taken the blame. USATF also confirmed that Marine Corps is sanctioned for Sunday. Last year at MCM, Tessa Barrett's 2:34:08 didn't count for the same reason
