The new Edition drops today.
It’s a magical time to build. Hope this Edition shows how much fun we’re having.

If you work in software, reconsider everything. Some things stay, some don’t. So much pre-AI is now sunk cost.
I know you want to hear it’s all gonna be fine, you can just keep doing whatever you’ve been up to.
That’s the only thing I’m 100% sure is false.

Entirely true. It's the second-rate programmers that are having trouble adapting to AI, and screaming about it.
The A-list guys are delighted. Listen to Linus Torvalds. Or DHH. Or, a little outside my usual community, Uncle Bob Martin. We can get so much more done now!
I agree with everything OP says except "watching all of those years go down the drain."
AI might have made it almost meaningless to write code by hand anymore. But the people who have spent years/decades writing code are now in the best position to leverage AI coding tools.
Learning to code was a stepping stone toward learning to decompose and solve complex problems. I have worked with a lot of different people with different levels of coding experience. And I can say with confidence that, in general, the more coding experience you have, the better you're positioned to think about long-horizon tasks and to organize and tackle problems with multiple moving parts.
All those skills directly translate to using AI coding agents. And I'm seeing it happen in real time. People with long software engineering experience have a totally different way of using AI coding agents (given that they set their ego aside and accept that this is the new norm). They are more organized, know how to steer the agent like guiding an intern or mentoring a junior dev.
People who don't have coding experience are using agents in a random and chaotic way (the approach has its outside-the-box-thinking merits but doesn't have the same reliability as the experienced SWE approach).

it might sound woo woo, but radiating positive energy is the closest thing to magic i've found. tip generously, compliment strangers, share your knowledge with no expectation of anything in return. give like you have more than enough, and eventually you’ll find that you do.

Now you can integrate Shop Pay as a standalone wallet for *any* transaction, not just on purchases from Shopify stores.
Use Shop Pay on tickets, on food, and so much more.

Benefits of the CAFE stack (@Cloudflare + @alchemy_run + @foldkit + @EffectTS_) for building software with coding agents:
1. Agents invent less architecture. They focus on product-level execution within a well-defined architecture. You build faster, with more confidence. You focus on what makes your product unique.
2. Your codebase becomes semantically rich. Intent and meaning are explicit rather than left for future agents to infer. Each new agent spends fewer tokens reconstructing intent.
3. Tests read like executable behavioral specs. Expected behavior is easy to inspect, and both humans and agents can verify implementations against it.
4. Strong conventions result in remarkably legible AI-generated code. Agents do what you expect more often, with less steering. The codebase feels consistent and predictable.
5. Explicitness makes behavior clear. Unexpected magic has fewer places to hide. Diffs are easier to review. Yes, it’s more LoC, but who cares when you’re not writing it by hand?

I’m working with Metafields and Metaobjects these days as well, what can we do to make them better?

AI build out is similar in a lot of ways to the railroad build out of the 1800s.
Pennsylvania and New York Central in 1880s realized that they could not spend their competitors into bankruptcy, so they started asking for federal regulation of industry.
modern travel is increasingly flying 10 hours to experience a slightly different version of the same globally optimized lifestyle.

Training tiny models for special purpose use cases works so incredibly well if you have a great self improving recursive flywheel. Shopify ML team is on fire.

My favourite project at @Shopify Hack Days is the #DeadCodeClub
Last summer we deleted 5m line of code (LOC)
At Summit in July we just deleted 15M LOC 🤯
Everything gets better when you delete unused code — build times, maintainability, deployments, etc
We use a combo of static analysis, observability traces, and human judgement pairing with an LLM to find these
We also have a *gardening* skill in River (our company wide harness) that proactively helps you identify + fix these over time — so you don't have to wait for the next Hack Days 💪🏽
