Shreyes Kanumuru, a talented undergraduate researcher, in the Rice Research Group presented his UG research at @LifeAtPurdue Fall Expo today! He found many of the recommended therapies are ineffective against several strains of Balamuthia and that newer drugs are urgently needed!

Today we received ~160,000 drugs to screen against #braineatingamoeba. This will be the worlds largest drug screen against these #neglected diseases! This will take us ~2 months to process ๐ฅฒ. ๐ค we identify some more useful scaffolds to optimize in #drugs !

Great news ... but a stable model has to be found ... and I don't feel that we should give @NIAIDFunding a free pass on this. I am still puzzled that one would cut funding to something we urgently need and replace it with something few of us have asked for or need for.

Did you know the most recent FDA-approval for ALS were two repurposed treatments?
This isnโt just a step forward in battling this relentless disease but also underscores the incredible potential of drug repurposing.
This novel approach combines a longstanding nutraceutical with a generic drug, both familiar in the medical community for decades.
This breakthrough is a vivid reminder that innovation doesn't always mean inventing something new. Sometimes, it's about looking at existing resources through a different lens, discovering new applications for old solutions.
The success of this treatment reinforces the idea that the shelves of our pharmacies hold not just medicines for today's ailments but also keys to unlocking future therapies.
How can we further leverage this strategy to uncover more life-changing treatments hidden in plain sight? #MedTwitter
