I have realized not a lot of people understand how obsessed we are with what we are working towards. I have used Runway every day, almost every hour, and have been for the last 8 years. I think a lot of research efforts and companies these days are driven by opportunistic motives more than intrinsic motivation or personal passion. It's a big market and investors are willing to throw money at anything that says AI, which ends up creating misaligned organizations chasing the wrong objectives. My long-running thesis has been that if you fundamentally don't care about what you are building, if you don't have a passion for it, especially for understanding AI as a creative medium, then you will get tired very soon and switch to whatever is hot next. Obsession breeds excellence. Creating great things comes from acting out of genuine care. The best way to understand why anything exists is to understand the motivations of the people behind it. If you understand what they care about - their passions, their obsessions, their rabbit holes - you begin to see why things take the shape they do.
