Today I spoke directly to Albertans following yesterday’s referendum vote. Alberta will remain in Canada, and for as long as I serve as premier, there will not be another referendum on the issue of separation. I’m also pleased that Albertans also gave our government a mandate to take greater control over immigration, to ensure temporary residents pay their share of the services they use and to require proof of citizenship to vote. Those reforms are coming, and they will strengthen Alberta’s autonomy. Now is the time to move forward not as a people divided by how we voted yesterday, but as neighbours, friends, Albertans and Canadians. Together, we will keep Alberta and Canada forever strong and free.

Alberta is mourning alongside the Canadian Armed Forces and the families, friends and colleagues of those affected by the tragic incident at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright yesterday. The loss of life and injuries are heartbreaking. On behalf of the Government of Alberta, I extend my deepest condolences to the families who have lost loved ones and wish those who have been injured a full recovery. Our thoughts are also with the military personnel, families and colleagues facing uncertainty and grief during this incredibly difficult time. We are deeply grateful to the first responders, paramedics, physicians, nurses and hospital teams across Alberta who have mobilized to provide care to those injured. Albertans should all be incredibly proud of their frontline health care workers and our acute care system that has managed this mass casualty event. We’re also thankful to our neighbours in Saskatchewan who did not hesitate to support our response with additional air ambulance capacity, and to other provinces who have reached out offering their support and condolences. I will be traveling to Edmonton today to meet with provincial ministers and federal officials. The Government of Alberta continues to work closely with the federal government and local authorities. We have convened our Emergency Management Cabinet Coordination Committee and the Provincial Emergency Coordination Centre (PECC) has been activated to a level 3. As a mark of respect for those who have lost their lives and in solidarity with the military community and their families, flags at provincial government buildings across Alberta will be lowered to half-mast. In the days ahead, our thoughts will remain with everyone affected by this tragedy. Alberta stands with the Canadian Armed Forces, the people of Wainwright and all those grieving during this difficult time.

Alberta closed the books on 2025-26 with a $2.2 billion surplus and the Heritage Savings Trust Fund finished the year at a record high of more than $32 billion. We delivered that surplus in the same year we cut personal income taxes with a new 8% bracket, the lowest in the country. That put up to $750 back in the pocket of every Albertan and up to $1,500 back with the average family. The Heritage Fund is on track to reach $35 billion in 2027 and $250 billion by 2050. Every dollar of income stays in and compounds. That is a promise to Albertans who come next and keeping it is one of the most important things this government will ever do.

What a great show of support for Adeara at their Evening of Dreams fundraising gala! I was deeply moved to hear the stories of lives changed through women continuously choosing their own future and recovery. Adeara is an accredited long-term addiction recovery centre for women and their children that was established in 1998. Importantly, Adeara works to keep mothers and children together during long-term treatment. Recovery is possible with the right supports.

Today, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we remember the painful legacy of residential schools and their lasting impact on Indigenous families and communities. Reconciliation invites us to listen, to learn from the past and continue building stronger relationships with First Nations and Métis people based on respect, partnership and understanding. Reconciliation must be backed by action. We remain committed to working alongside First Nations and Métis communities to support their priorities, from creating new economic opportunities through the Alberta Indigenous Opportunities Corporation to supporting Indigenous-led recovery communities that provide culturally appropriate care closer to home. We will continue building these partnerships, strengthening communities and advancing reconciliation together.

Thrilled to open two new addiction pre-treatment houses in Edmonton through Oxford House! We are continuing to add to the recovery oriented system of care in Edmonton. This is the beginning of a $10 million investment to add more pre-treatment and post-treatment capacity right across the province. Pre-treatment beds bridge the gap between detox and addiction treatment beds.

People from across Alberta gathered to recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation at the Legislature grounds today. We marked the day early as people may want to spend September 30 in their communities. We gathered to honour residential school Survivors and reflect on the ongoing legacy of residential schools. On September 30, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we pause, listen and carry these truths forward with respect, care, and a commitment to keep learning.

So inspiring to join the 10th annual Recovery Capital Conference! Incredible to see so many people come together to speak and learn from best practices and lived experiences. Together, we are finding ways to better connect and integrate the continuum of addiction and mental health care in Alberta. Recovery is possible with the right supports!

Global uncertainty continues to push energy prices higher, and that’s putting more pressure on Albertans’ wallets. Today I announced that relief is on the way. Starting Oct. 1, Alberta will suspend the full provincial fuel tax, saving Albertans 13 cents per litre on gasoline and diesel every time they fill up until the end of the year. This is practical relief that helps families, workers and businesses keep more money in their pockets. Albertans already pay the lowest overall taxes in Canada, and this cut adds to our unmatched tax advantage.
