18-year-old driver Ali A., who was traveling at 115 km/h in a 50 km/h zone in Rotterdam, Netherlands, crashed into a car and killed 33-year-old Elisabeth, who was 14 weeks pregnant with her first child. Dutch prosecutors are seeking eight months in prison and a five-year driving ban for Ali A. Ali was driving a brand-new BMW X1 bought by his father when prosecutors say he swerved across the road, entered the wrong lane and narrowly avoided an oncoming vehicle while overtaking at extremely high speed before smashing into Elisabeth’s car as she was turning left. She died from her injuries later that day. Prosecutors suspect Ali had inhaled propellant from anti-dust spray before driving. After the crash, his BMW ended up in a ditch and he ran from the vehicle and threw away two spray cans. Ali denies inhaling them, claiming he had bought the cans to clean dust from his PlayStation and discarded them because he feared they would give police “the wrong impression.” The prosecution said it did not believe his explanation, but his suspected drug use cannot legally be proven because the hospital mistakenly destroyed his blood sample.
