Last #NZ election, 450,000 of the special votes cast were by those who enrolled in the 2 weeks before the election. 110,000 enrolled on the day. This is the scale of the potential disenfranchisement of the Govt law change stopping enrolment on 25 October: nzherald.co.nz/the-listener/…

I don't really get all the fuss over politicians visiting gangs. They are voters. It's not illegal. And no, I'm not a fan of gangs.

Really excited. New book about Samuel Coates, who helped build Goodwood Stables in North Otago for my Swedish ancestor Charles Suisted 1849. Says Charles was one of the 1st to introduce large scale farming to NZ, who would’ve thought that would catch on. Those stables are 2nd …

…oldest farm buildings in NZ. And this after taking over Barrett’s hotel in Wellington from Dicky Barrett in the 1840’s and turning the leading establishment. I’m named for his FIL Capt Robert Richmond, which Bobby’s Head is named for near Shag Point. My Whakapapa.

Aside from the shocking substance of this story, what's amazing is how it was unearthed by Cole. The short version: The Russians were able to penetrate Jared Kushner's iPhone and extract screenshots and data. Then, a Russian intel official was captured by Dutch intelligence (!) and flipped. The Dutch believed Kushner may have been acting on behalf of Russia, so pursued him as an intel target and were able to get into his phone. They did not find any evidence of Russian collusion, instead they watched him moving hundreds of millions of dollars from slush funds created by Saudi Arabia and the UAE, one of them housed in Israel's central bank. Incredible reporting, and if Democrats have any sense, they will pull on these threads and learn a lot more about this money.
Explosive story many years in the making, now out in Vanity Fair by Matthew Cole (who will be on Breaking Points next week, and publishing soon in @DropSiteNews): Saudi Arabia and the UAE set up multi-billion slush funds for Jared Kushner to use. Iran-Contra 2 here (except with Iran-Contra, at least the US got some hostages released. Not clear what we got out of this one.)

Major update. The Op Shop has SOLD the elastocastrator! I’m wondering if some old biddy is wondering why her walnuts aren’t opening, but her husband is worried
Asked the ladies in the Op Shop if they knew what these were for? Best guess was ‘nuts, like walnuts’. Close I guess 🥜 🔩 🌰 🍒

Between 1984 and 2014, the New Zealand Crown sold roughly $23.7 billion of state-owned businesses to private buyers. Adjusted for today it’s about 50 billion. Those assets have generated over 500b in profit/dividends since being sold. newswire.co.nz/2026/05/sold-…

Listen to Ben. Cherry trees are NZ’s biggest future conservation issue no one saw coming. They can grow under and then over crown our native forests, and the kicker is Kereru spread them well
🚨 SPRING PEST ALERT ⚠️ Yesterday I stopped by to have a yarn with the good folk at Pest Free Tawa. It's cherry trees (Prunus Avium) that are top of mind for them at the moment. If you've got one in the yard, now may be the time to replace it with a kōwhai instead 🌳

As much as I hate wilding cherry trees, you have to admit they hv good taste, self seeding into the planters at Nada Bakery! Spotted while Clem & I put away a quality jalapeño, cheese and steak pie. Sneaky sods! @ponekeben #Tawa

Been flagging this for a few years. People keep planting them unfortunately. Even the nurseryman who imported the first is saying he wished he hadn’t.
Ornamental cherry trees are a scourge. Look at the bird carried speed into regenerating native forest right to hill top now. They will remain as the dominant canopy tree I suspect. Grrrr

Dame Edna glanced at Judi Dench and Sharon Osbourne, both dressed dark, and asked what funeral they’d just been to completely straight-faced, as if she was genuinely checking in. She didn’t wait for the laugh or a signal it was a joke. She just kept going while they were still processing it. The insult only works because she delivers it like ordinary small talk. By the time everyone catches the implication, she’s already somewhere else.

51 years ago today my bro Tony & 4 colleagues were slain in Balibo Timor Leste by Indonesian troops. No one was ever charged no one ever said sorry. Decades of lies. It still distresses me Mum only ever got 1 call from the Aus Gov saying `Where do we send the bill for the coffin?
