I am soon leaving this room for good. Literally. The state of this space means it can't be supported in any way. The manipulation, the falsehoods and the misinformation.
I want to stay in touch, so follow me if you are minded instagram.com/robbiecowen / robcowen at Bluesky.

@robbiecowen Rob Cowen talked about his multi-layered, genre-bending book, The North Road, on Wednesday evening to a full-capacity audience. It was an informative exploration of the history, people and places along this primary route through our country. A fabulous read. A massive thank you to Rob for entertaining us on his birthday!

THE NORTH ROAD by @robbiecowen
This year’s module with The Open University - Understanding Politics - is both fascinating and mind-expanding. It’s making me think about concepts of politics in entirely new ways, including reflecting on notions of the ‘spaces of politics’ and the ‘politics of space’.
I have been introduced to the work of Doreen Massey, a groundbreaking geographer, and in turn that has given me a new appreciation of one of the best books I have read this year, THE NORTH ROAD by Rob Cowen.
Doreen Massey argues that space is never static — it’s ‘the product of interrelations’, always alive with overlapping stories, movements, and possibilities. Place, for her, is not a fixed location but a meeting point: a living negotiation between past and present, local and global, human and more-than-human.
Rob Cowen’s THE NORTH ROAD brings that vision vividly to life. Across centuries of voices and lives, his northern bound road becomes a tapestry of coexistence — soldiers and travellers, animals and builders, refugees and family — all layered within the same stretch of earth. The road isn’t just a setting; it’s a palimpsest of power, memory, and belonging.
Like Massey’s ‘global sense of place’, Cowen’s writing reminds us that every local landscape is porous, threaded through with wider histories and ecologies. THE NORTH ROAD turns geography into story, and story into a way of seeing how space itself is political, plural, and alive.
I cannot recommend Cowen’s book highly enough. With poetic elegance, it celebrates our past and explains our present, in ways that bring Doreen Massey’s theories to exquisite life.

“I was told when I first moved to London that Bill and Richard would often be fished out of the same #Hampstead pubs I would trek friends up to - the Wells Tavern, the Hollybush, the Flask.” Rob Cowen, The North Road, p48
How many own goals do you want to score Labour? My god. You have transitioned from a party that people believed and trusted had sane, ecological policies and progressive environment thinking to a rudderless, meaningless, embarrassing mess.

BAD NEWS💔if the vote had taken place earlier we would have won-Tories (majority) whipped YES but by the time of the vote, support had gone home just like 2 years ago. It is an AGONISING reality. Tell [email protected] what you think. GUTTED. Labour: what a betrayal 😡

Thanks so much @CarolAtherton8 - what a wonderful response. Find that quiet corner! Follow the highway...
All I want to do at the moment is to sit quietly somewhere and read this book. Stunning non-fiction that weaves together so many things very cleverly and has a beautiful sense of place. @robbiecowen, it’s magnificent.
