🇨🇦 ON THIS DAY IN CANADIAN SPORTS HISTORY
🏎️ OCTOBER 26, 1997 — JACQUES VILLENEUVE BECOMES FORMULA ONE WORLD CHAMPION!
A Canadian flag. A world championship. And one of the most dramatic title deciders in Formula One history! 🇨🇦
On this day in 1997, Jacques Villeneuve of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, captured the Formula One World Drivers’ Championship at the European Grand Prix in Jerez, Spain.
Driving his Williams-Renault FW19, the 26-year-old Canadian entered the final race of the season just one point behind Ferrari’s Michael Schumacher.
The championship was on the line, and the tension couldn’t have been greater.
In qualifying, Villeneuve, Schumacher, and Heinz-Harald Frentzen astonishingly recorded identical fastest lap times, down to the thousandth of a second! Villeneuve secured pole position because he had set the time first.
During the race, Schumacher led, with Villeneuve pursuing him relentlessly.
Then came the defining moment.
On lap 48, Villeneuve attempted to pass Schumacher at the Dry Sac corner. The two cars collided as Schumacher turned into the Williams.
Schumacher slid into the gravel and retired. Villeneuve continued, his car damaged but still running.
Knowing he needed only to finish in the points, Villeneuve eventually crossed the line in third place, behind Mika Häkkinen and David Coulthard.
Jacques Villeneuve was the 1997 Formula One World Champion!
The achievement was historic.
Villeneuve became the first Canadian to win the Formula One World Drivers’ Championship, accomplishing what his legendary father, Gilles Villeneuve, had never quite achieved before his tragic death in 1982.
Even more remarkably, Jacques had won the Indianapolis 500 and CART championship in 1995, before conquering Formula One in only his second season.
That afternoon in Spain, a young Canadian stood proudly before an enormous maple leaf, his fists raised in triumph.
Canada had a Formula One World Champion.
And 29 years later, Jacques Villeneuve remains the only Canadian ever to win the title.

And there it is...where the owners of Formula One, find the value in it.

The result? Villeneuve won the title for Williams and Schumacher was disqualified from the standings.
29 years on, the internet continues to debate the incident.

I remember this day very vividly.
What a race and season.
1997: Villeneuve wins the title
#OnThisDay 26 October, Williams driver Jacques Villeneuve secured the 1997 Drivers’ Championship in a dramatic finale at the 1997 European Grand Prix, overcoming a controversial clash with the Ferrari of Michael Schumacher. On lap 48, Villeneuve attempted a decisive pass on Schumacher, only for the German driver to turn into him, resulting in heavy contact. Schumacher ended up in the gravel, while Villeneuve continued to finish third and clinch the title. “Either he had his eyes shut, or his hands slipped on the steering wheel,” Villeneuve fumed after the race. “I knew there was a 50% chance he’d try to take me out.” Schumacher defended his actions, claiming, “Jacques braked so late that if I hadn’t turned in, we both would have missed the corner.”
The FIA later sided with Villeneuve, penalising Schumacher by stripping him of all his championship points. The McLaren drivers Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard took a 1-2 finish for the team.
