Roland the Farter was a medieval jester who entertained the court during the 12th century under the reign of King Henry II of England. He gained notable fame for his unique and rather unusual talent. His exceptional ability lay in producing musical-like sounds through the use of flatulence, which he cleverly incorporated into his court performances. Roland's extraordinary control over this unconventional talent allowed him to turn farts into a form of amusing expression. Thanks to his peculiar but crowd-pleasing skill, Roland became a beloved figure at King Henry II's court. In recognition of his performances, he received special privileges and rewards. Medieval chronicler Roger Hoveden documented a Christmas celebration in 1052 where Roland showcased his talents. King Henry II was so delighted with the performance that he rewarded Roland with a manor house located in the village of Hemingstone, Suffolk, England. Along with the estate, Roland also received a significant parcel of land and various other benefits.
