His contribution to our State has been immense, and his legacy will be be felt for many years to come.
On behalf of the State Government, I want to thank Paul for his decades of dedicated service to Western Australia and wish him all the very best for the future.
No matter the portfolio, Paul has always approached the job with energy, determination and a genuine commitment to making Western Australia a better place.
As Tourism Minister, Paul helped put WA on the world stage, securing new direct international flights, supporting our tourism operators through the challenges of COVID-19, and helping make the Rottnest quokka selfie a global phenomenon with visits from the likes of Roger Federer.
He also oversaw responses to major natural disasters, supporting communities through some of their toughest times, while driving major reforms to our prison system and planning for its future, including a new dedicated youth detention facility.
He delivered the first complete rewrite of our firearm laws in more than 50 years, introducing some of the toughest gun laws in the country.
Across his Police, Emergency Services and Corrective Services portfolios, Paul was driven by a commitment to making WA an even safer place.
He secured major AUKUS opportunities, including local submarine construction, and laid the foundations for defence to become our State's second-largest industry.
He brought that experience into Government, becoming WA's first Defence Industries Minister and helping position our State at the centre of the nation's defence and security future.
Today's announcement marks an extraordinary 45 years of service to his country, WA & the people of our State. Before entering Parliament, Paul had a distinguished career in the Navy, commanding a Clearance Diving Team, a patrol boat & the Navy's submarine escape & rescue service.
This morning, my friend Paul Papalia announced he'll be retiring from State Parliament.
I want to sincerely thank Paul for everything he's given to our State over nearly two decades in Parliament.
I’d also like to say thank you to every Western Australia working this weekend to keep our state moving, particularly those getting our fuel to where it’s needed most.
Enjoy your Easter long weekend and stay safe WA.
I understand these are anxious times.
But Western Australia has stared down global challenges before, and we will get through this the way we always do: together.
But if you take more than you need, it means other Western Australians miss out.
This including farmers, tradies, and shift workers who need that fuel to do their jobs and keep Western Australia strong.
But I’m also asking West Aussies to do their bit.
Only take the fuel you normally would - no more, no less.
There is supply, and we’re monitoring the situation closely.
Across Government, we are taking action to ensure Western Australia is as prepared as possible, regardless of the global uncertainty we face.
This week, along with the Federal Government, we’ve reduced the fuel excise by 32 cents a litre, delivering savings to WA families.
We’ll provide clear, consistent information so that Western Australians remain informed as we navigate these global pressures together.
Additional resources and information can also be found by visiting wa.gov.au/fuel.
This is the WA Government’s weekly Friday Fuel Update to keep the public informed on our state’s fuel security.
These updates detail the specific actions we are taking to manage supply chain issues caused by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
