Spinmeisters will be telling us what it all means over the coming days. Tamping down identity politics & ramping up economic populism moved the dial in key swing and even red states. But “less drama, sturdy organizational structure" performed exceedingly well in NC and GA.

Buttigieg: I voted for Abdul, it was because Abdul is for everybody getting health care running against Mike Rogers, who repeatedly voted to cut the affordable care act. This vote was not a close call for me. And whatever Haley Stevens says isn't going to change that for me. And I don't think it's changing that for a lot of Michiganders either.

Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas (1934-2026) died a few days ago. He was the son of Lázaro Cárdenas, one of the most remarkable of Mexico's presidents (1934-1940). This is a photograph taken on 13 November 1994 at Guadalupe Tepeyac, Chiapas with Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), former president of Mexico (2018-1014), Subcomandante Marcos of the EZLN (Zapatistas), and Rosario Ibarra de Piedra (1927-2022). Doña Rosario entered politics when her son Jesús Piedra Ibarra (a member of the Liga Comunista 23 de Septiembre) was disappeared by the state; she founded and ran Comité Eureka to campaign against forced disappearances. This is a fabulous picture of four icons of the Mexican left. Go well Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas, who paved the way.

A well-known left sociologist commented to me last summer that the Vanderbilt Report would blow over -- unless we circled the wagons and attempted to mount a collective response to it. I'm beginning to think that he was right.

The tragedy is that the long-run erosion of social intimacy characteristic of modern bourgeois society doesn’t even need ham-fisted scare campaigns like this one. This ad is really just post-hoc justification for existing trends towards atomisation.
🇮🇪 The Irish state has published an advert discouraging grandparents from hugging their grandchildren, as part of a campaign designed to promote "consent".

At a time of recurring sex panics and ongoing moral freakouts, you should all see this prickly and provocative play. (I wrote an essay for the London National Theatre production's Playbill and also helped publicize the DC Wooly Mammoth production.) downstateonbroadway.com

Fringe activists booed and hissed Mamdani, while social media ultras went after Ossoff -- who had voted to suspend weapons shipments to Israel and denounced the massacres in Gaza but deferred use of the g-word pending ICC investigations. John Judis, as usual, is helpful here.

CLR James acknowledged Garvey's power as an orator, propagandist, mobiliser & his role in putting 'black consciousness" on stage. He wasn't totally dismissive. But he also compared Garvey to Hitler as a racial demagogue & a reactionary.
In any event, Ralph Leonard is being shallow. CLR James admired Garvey and James was no fascist. Context and language are important. Garvey also praised the KKK ironically but you would be a fool to assert that that means that Garvey approved of the KKK's racist terrorism
