A rare day with a clear diary so I decided to book it off. It was nice to spend some of it at one of my favourite @EnglishHeritage properties @BoscobelHG. Feeling a bit more recharged, ready for a busy next few days.

Pope Leo has lung adenocarcinoma. He is 71, physically active, no reported smoking history. Ask anyone to picture a lung cancer patient and they’ll describe a smoker. Lung cancer in never-smokers would rank among the deadliest cancers in the world on its own. Adenocarcinoma is the subtype that shows up in fit, asymptomatic people. And the stereotype costs lives. Lung cancer still kills more people than breast, prostate and colorectal combined, yet gets a fraction of the funding per death. Patients get asked “did you smoke?” before “how are you?", nobody asks that of pancreatic cancer. That stigma delays diagnosis. If you don’t fit the picture, nobody thinks of it first. Just like in young people where you always get pushed back with "you're too young for cancer". You don't have to be old to have cancer, and you don't have to smoke to get lung cancer. xitter.cf/news_vaticano/status/2…
I haven’t even booked my member tickets to the Bayeux tapestry exhibition yet, but had to get a Harold Godwinson pin badge none the less!

I’m emotionally frazzled, so it’s extra nice to finally sit down with a nice cuppa and continue re-reading Prof @peter_sarris brilliant book on Byzantine Emperor Justinian. Can’t wait for the new book on Byzantium: The Eternal Empire.

A fantastic day of military history at @HerefordFest today. Thank you to two of my favourite historians, @dgjones for discussing castles and Thomas W Smith discussing the Fifth Crusade. Thank you to all the volunteers too.

Very much enjoyed watching ‘Pressure’ this evening, a true story about the D-Day landings. Great cast, nice score and loved the enhanced footage of the actual landings too 🎬🍿📽️

Hi Prof @peter_sarris. I’m planning my first visit to Thessaloniki and wondered if there are any Byzantine sites you’d particularly recommend, beyond the usual guidebook highlights. Thank you in advance. Can’t wait for your new book by the way!

There for a week, but will hire a car to spend a couple of days visiting elsewhere. The itinerary currently consists of the museum of Byzantine civilisation, Byzantine bath, Rotonda and the various churches including St Demetrius, Acheiropoietos church and Hagia Sophia.

As someone who adores Byzantium, Anthony Kaldellis’ ‘1453’ has been a joy to read. The cover is so beautiful too! The account of the city’s conquest still pulls at my heartstrings across the centuries. An incredible capital city which lasted 1,123 years.

Interviewer: “it’s incredible, you have 19 #1s, more than any solo artist in history. @MariahCarey: “But I only wrote 18 of them” ✍🏻🦋🐑👑

I took a day of annual leave because I’m absolutely exhausted. And what do I stumble across in the second‑hand bookshop at the local National Trust? Only a book about my favourite historical site I’ve ever visited! 😍#byzantium

no one talks about how draining it is when your mood constantly switches between "keep going, it will get better" and "i can't do this anymore, im about to give up." it's like living in emotional whiplash. one hour you're hopeful, the next you're spiraling

Hi @britishmuseum. I know it’s a very long shot, but do you know if you will ever bring back any Roman legion mugs? I purchased one following the ‘Legion’ exhibition a couple of years ago and I’m gutted that I’ve dropped it! 😞 I appreciate they were limited edition!
