Sadly the directing in Clayface was mid at best…
Strongest parts of the film came from Mike Flanagan’s script. Far as future DCU Horrors go, see James Mangold’s Swamp Thing film out and then do Zach Cregger’s Joker Henchmen idea.
I’m good on James Watkins.
The DCU’s Batman film (BATB) has been in development since 2022…
If they were making good progress on that film I guarantee you it would’ve come out this year. However, they’ve gone through multiple writers and the script STILL isn’t done. So while BATB was going through script hell, they used the delays with The Batman Part 2 as an excuse to feet drag. Also you obviously wouldn’t want to release two Batman films in the same year. So as a result, we likely aren’t getting BATB until 2029.
“Clayface can’t even make Morbius opening weekend numbers lmao” meanwhile…
Kraven: Opened to $26M

Jeff Sneider’s full answer on what he heard regarding DCU Batman:
He just threw Glen Powell out as a guess for DCU Batman based on the age range he heard (early 40s). He didn’t hear anything specifically from sources about Glen Powell as Batman.

Glen Powell as Batman is going to be a no from me…
He’s too upbeat, charming, comical, and charismatic for a role like Batman. He’d only work if they wanted a campy version of the character like George Clooney or Adam West.

The DCU really needs to stop being so afraid to make movies longer than 2 hours…
Superman (without credits): 1 hour 58 minutes
Supergirl: 1 hour 48 minutes
Clayface: 1 hour 48 minutes
All three of which could’ve benefited from longer runtimes.
Yes, that was Aaron Paul in 'CLAYFACE'.
Director James Watkins confirms the Breaking Bad star plays Matt Hagen’s abusive father, the last trace of a full set of flashbacks shot and then cut.
“He has a real brief Easter egg kind of moment.”

Clayface certified fresh with the score continuing to rise…
This is why you shouldn’t take Twitter hate farmers seriously, mfers were really talking about it’s some Sonyverse Spider-Man villain ish🤣
Got to see #Clayface early…
I’ll give a more in depth review once the embargo lifts but for now I’ll say this is the best DCU film thus far. Tom Rhys Harries had a phenomenal performance as Matt Hagen (really getting you to feel the charming innocence in Matt early on), and the film had very strong vibes of Joker and The Fly in this slow descent into madness.
As Matt slowly discovers his abilities, the growing pains while he’s learning what his body can handle will make you cringe out loud with some clever and impressive VFX considering the budget.
I wouldn’t call it a masterpiece, but a damn good body horror. The flawed parts of the film for me were I thought it had a fairly weak antagonist, the plot was a bit generic, Gotham didn’t have as much personality as I expected, and Batman wasn’t mentioned or even hinted at. It felt a bit disconnected from the DCU. Overall this Gotham felt like Reevesverse-Lite.
There was however some good cinematography in the scenic city views of Glasgow, once again used as the setting for Gotham. While The Batman had slightly better cinematography, and how Reeves portrayed the city was a bit better, this was solid.
The film had some pacing issues the first 10 minutes as I felt like Matt’s life pre-catastrophic event was a bit rushed through, but once they settled in it was smooth sailing. Things were firing on all cylinders in the third act as well.
Overall I’d say Clayface was an 8/10, and I’ll definitely be rewatching it soon.

All it takes is a 2-minute search of Gunn’s Threads replies to see he never said this😭
James Gunn says the DCU Batman isn’t from Gotham.
(via: @JamesGunn | Threads)
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
James Gunn has not said the DCU Batman isn’t from Gotham; the screenshot appears fabricated. Clayface is set in the DCU's Gotham (Batman simply does not appear in the film).
