Swiss glaciers lost 5% of their ice in 2026, accdg to GLAMOS. Their total volume has shrunk by nearly 20% in the last 5 years.
This echoes the WMO’s #StateOfWater 2025 report, which found that every glaciated region on Earth lost ice in the last 5 years.

Since 2025, ICIMOD has established the Hindu Kush-Himalayan Futures Forum (H2F2), an informal but influential think-tank of eminent diplomats, academics, and experts drawn from ICIMOD’s member countries to provide high-level strategic advice and thought leadership.
The 2026 edition, its second chapter, has begun today in Pokhara, Nepal (15 to 18 October 2026), exploring pathways to strengthen regional cooperation and advance regional leadership.
In just the past few weeks, Nepal has witnessed devastating mountain disasters. The catastrophic Bhote Koshi flood in Rasuwa and the recent Budhi Gandaki flood in Gorkha have demonstrated how cascading hazards involving glaciers, rockfalls, landslides, water, and sediment are becoming increasingly destructive in our mountains.

A nunatak is the summit of a mountain that protrudes from an ice field or glacier.
This 6,955-foot (2,120-meter) horn in the Quartermain Mountains of Antarctica, is one of such peaks: it's know as Pyramid Mountain.

The Congo Basin is one of the few regions where the IPCC has failed to track long-term changes in extreme heat.
The problem is a lack of data. To fill this gap, scientists digitized thousands of handwritten records, which reveal the impact of warming.

#Isaias has strengthened into a major Category 3 hurricane. Infrared imagery from @NOAA’s #GOESEast (#GOES19) 🛰️ is tracking Isaias as it approaches the northern Gulf Coast, where dangerous conditions are expected—including hurricane-force winds, life-threatening storm surge, flash flooding and possible tornadoes.

Eye of Hurricane Isaias now forming -- rapidly. Dangerous next 24 hours ahead as the hurricane sits over the deep and warm "Loop Currrent" and the same area that powered history's most intense storms.
We can only hope for wind shear to retard the intensification.

#Isaias is now a #hurricane - the first of the 2026 Atlantic season. The last season with zero Atlantic hurricanes was 1914. Of course, our observational system is much better now than it was in 1914, so we may have missed hurricane(s) that year.

🌀Have you noticed the National Hurricane Center is testing a new track cone this season?
The new experimental graphic draws the cone using ovals (instead of circles) that separate forward speed from left-or-right track errors and cover 90% of possible track outcomes (up from the traditional 67%). Look for "EXPERIMENTAL" in red at the bottom left of the map.
What do you think of the new design? Share your feedback: surveymonkey.com/r/ProposedC…
