I'm very very sad tonight. I just learned that Stephen Biesty passed away in 2024 at 63... He is one of my favorite artist. Rest in peace.

EXCALIBUR (1981) is a masterpiece.
What’s the hardest scene in all of fiction? The kind of scene that makes you sit back and think, “Yeah, nothing is topping this.”

After many false starts and delays, my book The Independent Scholar has now been typeset and is being emailed to all who preordered. Just about everyone today assumes that to produce a lasting body of work, one must pass through a "credible" institution and secure a certain kind of job, patron, publisher, or grant. But the historical record shows otherwise. Twas much harder than I anticipated, and I'm all too aware of its remaining imperfections, but overall I'm pleased with the result.

ROME (2005) was cut short by its enormous production costs, not a lack of ambition. What remains is some of the rawest historical television ever made, filled with political betrayal, brutal violence and a refreshingly unromantic portrait of ancient Rome.
Besides THE WIRE, THE SOPRANOS and GAME OF THRONES, what’s one HBO series everyone needs to watch at least once? Looking for those underrated gems and all-time greats that deserve to be in the conversation.

Good article on Napoleon’s work ethic - many thanks to Brad Corbin for sending this to me - “Napoleon would dictate letter after letter to his secretaries, often on a variety of subjects, without needing to stop for a moment and think. To show this, during the first three months of 1807, Napoleon sent 1,715 letters, an average of 19 letters per day.” medium.com/@Chaosers/what-ma…

On St. Crispin's Day, October 25, 1415, an outnumbered English army under King Henry V won at Agincourt. Shakespeare gave him the greatest speech on brotherhood: "We few, we happy few, we band of brothers." It still stirs the heart. (Kenneth Branagh, Henry V, 1989)
