Interesting to note that if the Greens didn’t exist, and every single Green vote went to NDP in each riding, the results with turn from 64-26-2 to 52-40, so still Conservative majority
Ok, so which polling firm came closed on -this- [waves towards a map of BC]?

Genetically engineered dogs for miliary, law enforcement, etc. Will be interesting to see, I guess, but I'll still take Neiko's RCMP line genetics and PDS training any day.

Shocking that Parks Canada is ending its K9 SAR dog program in Banff. (Disclaimer, I know and trained with the wardens on the wilderness search discipline when I was a validated K9 handler.) No CARDA avalanche dog in Parks is downright negligence. rmoutlook.com/banff/parks-ca…

I don’t read much fiction/non fiction these days (the practice law law kills your ability to read for pleasure), but I’m looking fwd to this one - by Whistler SARs long time team leader and SAR manager.

I'm probably dating myself here, but who else remembers the Radical Beer Faction slate in UBC student politics elections? I remember once a RBF candidate almost got elected... scared the heck out of him.
A man from British Columbia who told voters he had no idea what he was doing won the city council election with over 12,000 votes His campaign used messages like "Just trying to pay my rent" and "Let's see what happens?"

Once again proving its worth in times of emergency, when official sources are not yet providing substantive comment.
I want to update my original post which was based on another post that laid out the scenario & location of the incident. I accepted the scenario & questioned the location. In fact I’ve now received a great deal of new information from soldiers who were there & want to correct the record. So here’s what I know: the location is correct, the scenario (an artillery round caused the explosion) was totally wrong. Soldiers on the ground are saying 2 training scenarios were happening in that location simultaneously. First there is lots of static ranges that face the second lake from rifle ranges to a 60 mm mortar range to a grenade range to an antitank range limited to the M72 & 84 mm Carl Gustov. These hand held shoulder fired anti armour weapons have been used by CDN infantry platoons for 4 decades now. They are generally very effective & reliable. I’m told a Carl G was being fired at a target some 300 metres away from a static cement bay using the standing position. The safety officer stands about 18” away in a cement bay observing every action taken by the loader & gunner. This is very basic infantry training & carried out at least annually. In this case a high explosive (HE) round was being fired. Apparently shortly after the HE round was fired it malfunctioned & dove at full speed into the ground striking either a buried natural gas wellhead or pipeline which exploded. There were casualties at this range caused by the blast wave. Simultaneously there were some 150 soldiers training in fighting in built up areas (FIBUA or Urban Warfare) using blank ammo or just running through the basic drills using dry fire. No live ammunition, no explosives of any type, certainly no live indirect fire. There were 3 wooden structures being used & all three were completely destroyed by the blast. A significant number of casualties occurred here. The explosion led to a grass fire which was whipped up by strong gusts of wind which blew directly through the units bivouac site (tented area where troops sleep, rest, park vehicles etc) casing additional casualties. The fire then continued on & went beyond the training area into the municipality of Wainwright. At this point, it appears that this series of incidents began with a round malfunctioning & doing damage that never could have been imagined let alone predicted or prevented. As was the case last night, the fog of war/crisis still exists so information may still change. This is not because of a cover up or some imaginary conspiracy. If the casualty count is only half as high as some are claiming you will have to go back to the darkest days of WWII to find similar numbers & never has a training exercise seen anything like this so a great deal must be done in the immediate aftermath before making definitive public statements so please have patience, please believe everyone is trying to get this right & those who really care are more than willing to correct their earlier errors as the newest information comes in. Think long & hard about what you post…thousand of soldiers & their families are watching! Please keep them all including the military & civilian first responders in your prayers. I hope this helps & I’ll potentially post more as it becomes available.

If accurate this explains the extreme number of casualties in the Wainright disaster
Accounts from someone on the firing line was it was a shoulder fired HE round that "Dolphined" after it left the tube and went astray. NOT artillery. This round hit a gas well which exploded and flattened the 3 Kill Houses that were full of troops which happened to be in close proximity of the well. Approx 300 troops inside and many waiting outside them. There is nothing but splinters left of them. This also started a major fire that was fed by high winds that swept through the main Bivouac site housing the majority of troops in the field. The amount of injured is staggering and the fatality count IS going to climb as they recover more victims. In my 20+ years in the Army, I have only heard of a dolphining round happening once from a shoulder fired rocket. Not sure what would cause this other than possibly a faulty propellent.

Some Alberta (volunteer) SAR teams have also been activated. It’s an all hands on deck situation..
Active gas well… on a weapons range?!?

The military literally parachuting in medical personnel (legit, ‘no duff’ not training exercise) tells you all you need to know about the seriousness of the situation
I didn’t think I’d ever see SAR techs jumping over Wainwright for a real CASEVAC. The airspace above town is packed full. Crazy

Wainright wounded now being taken to Calgary and other cities (Edmonton seemingly overwhelmed)
This Alberta Central Airways King Beech Air 200 air ambulance is now inbound to Calgary from Wainwright. Involved assets to this point as best as I can track. -numerous (10?) fixed and rotary wing civilian and military air assets from across Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. -Edmonton, Wainwright, Lloydminster, Saskatoon, many local and now Calgary hospitals accepting patients. -I can only assume there are also hundreds of local EMS and civilians on site as well. This is big.

Active gas well… on a weapons range?!?
A catastrophic blast at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, Alberta has reportedly resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries during a live fire military training operation. According to local sources on base, Canadian Forces personnel had been conducting exercises over several days when an artillery projectile reportedly struck an active natural gas well on the bombing range, triggering a massive detonation. The blast is said to have levelled nearby tactical training buildings, with subsequent fires reaching munitions storage and setting off secondary detonations across the range. The geography and infrastructure; ➟ CFB Wainwright has a documented history of natural gas production, with approximately 180 wells reported on the military property in 2014. ➟ Military range maps identify munitions storage, pipelines and designated live fire danger areas near Peterson Pond. ➟ NASA FIRMS satellite imagery recorded multiple thermal hotspots between Peterson Pond and Jamieson Lake on October 17. Local accounts also describe hospitals activating Code Orange protocols, mobilizing stretchers and preparing for a significant influx of casualties. The reported gas well strike, secondary detonations and hospital emergency measures remain unconfirmed as authorities investigate the incident. Should these reports be confirmed, my thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved and affected.

Not a good situation for the Wainright wildfire tonight. Seemingly caused by live fire exercise on the military base…
Local patient at the Wainwright hospital has posted video and photos of patients coming in from the CFB Wainwright incident and resulting wildfire. The poster, @CrashMetaX says they believe it’s up to 150 injured, filling the hospital, and now utilizing an Alberta school. “There are burn victims everywhere.” Looking like this was a major emergency response.
