Delivering the Statement of South Africa 🇿🇦 during the debate on Agenda item 88 “United Nations Conference of Plenipotentiaries on Protection of Persons in the Event of Disasters” in the Sixth (Legal) Committee of the 81st #UNGA81 Adv. Keke Motsepe, Legal Counsellor at the South African 🇿🇦 Permanent Mission to the UN 🇺🇳 emphasised that :
“A future instrument on Protection of Persons in the Event of Disasters must go beyond a purely reactive paradigm. It must embed genuine international cooperation, capacity-building, and technology transfer as core obligations, particularly to enable developing countries to fulfil their responsibilities in risk reduction. To ensure that disasters do not perpetuate cycles of poverty and marginalisation, the structural vulnerabilities of the Global South cannot be placed on the back burner.”

Following a vote on the Declaration Commemorating the 25th Anniversary of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action (DDPA) at the @UN General Assembly, Ambassador Mxolisi Nkosi stated that South Africa, together with 95 member states of the UN were on the right side of history by voting in support of the political Declaration. Ambassador Nkosi indicated that South Africa regretted the lack of consensus on the text, a telling indication of persistent denialism and indifference towards racism and its numerous manifestations. South Africa is however encouraged that a committed, significant majority of member states has voted in favour of the Declaration. #DDPA @DIRCO

Ambassador Nkosi further reaffirmed the importance of strengthening the strategic partnership between the United Nations and the African Union in advancing efforts that support African countries, including through the Office of the Special Adviser on Africa (OSAA), the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), and the Regional Coordination Mechanism (RCM-Africa).
