Hope this is explored in the new MET theme: Denim was considered a poor working class uniform until Black southerners made it cool. SNCC’s organizing work in the South catapulted denim into cool. They wore denim to canvas areas to show the Black rural working class that they could relate to them by donning their uniform (denim) then brought it back to metros.
