Is the "boys don't read" problem a matter of supply or demand?
More than 70 percent of staff at America's Big Five publishers are women, as are more than 70 percent of editors and a majority of executives.
Adam Szetela argues this is the single biggest transformation in the history of American publishing, and that an industry recruiting almost entirely from elite universities has narrowed what reaches the shelves.

James Madison might be a rising college football power, but just remember--their defense couldn't stop the White House from getting burned down.

Unfortunately, Bioware really only had 3 distinct options going forward.
(I am probably not the first person to make this joke)
The Big 0 mecha is an all-time great mecha design because its so wildly different - an art deco dieselpunk colossus that moved and hit like a freight train.
Also, the whole show is an example that anime pulls as much from the West as we do Japan.
I saw this for the first time in a military theater while in my Army days.
In a theater full of guys just back from Iraq and Afghanistan, everyone agreed it was the worst thing they'd seen in a year.
Literal war was an improvement.

I was a bit concerned since it's James Bond it wouldn't have that Ennis flair but I was definitely worried for nothing
No. Dozens of people in Hollywood taking payoffs or agreeing to shill the party line by the Soviets did.
The Soviet archives were made public in the 90s - we know who was on the Soviet payroll.
That included Dalton Trumbo, who took payoffs and marching orders from Moscow.

Moscow one week after Operation Unthinkable happened. Repeated until the message sticks.
This is the same USSR that lost a war to Finland twice, relied on Lend-Lease to fight Germany, and whose entire war strategy was "Throw more bodies at them."
I feel the need to point out a significant chunk of men's adventure novels were published by Harlequin and other Romance publishers BECAUSE they knew such a market for male readers existed.
And because thier female romance readers bought the spicy men's adventure stuff, too.
I have an unsold short story that is sort of an important detail.
War between secret hidden wizard clans breaks out of containment. Muggles beat both in a day.
Finding out wizards have been hiding an instantaneous cure to cancer is what gets humanity to say all wizards are evil.
Replying to @BigDickBarclay
One of my favorite parts in the books is when Ron describes surgery from the wizarding perspective. When medical treatment is just waving a stick, the idea of cutting someone open and digging around inside of them is absolutely horrifying.

I've been reading some OG Conan the Barbarian lately. Conan goes hard:
"Our desires are quickly spoken, king of Aquilonia," said Tsotha. "It is our wish to extend our empire."
"And so you want to swine my kingdom," rasped Conan.
"What are you but an adventurer, seizing a crown to which you had no more claim than any other wandering barbarian?" parried Amalrus. "We are prepared to offer you suitable compensation—"
"Compensation!" It was a gust of deep laughter from Conan's mighty chest. "The price of infamy and treachery! I am a barbarian, so I shall sell my kingdom and its people for life and your filthy gold? Ha! How did you come to your crown, you and that black-faced pig beside you? Your fathers did the fighting and the suffering, and handed their crowns to you on golden platters. What you inherited without lifting a finger—except to poison a few brothers—I fought for.
"You sit on satin and guzzle wine the people sweat for, and talk of divine rights of sovereignty—bah! I climbed out of the abyss of naked barbarism to the throne and in that climb I spilt my blood as freely as I spilt that of others. If either of us has the right to rule men, by Crom, it is I! How have you proved yourselves my superiors?
"I found Aquilonia in the grip of a pig like you—one who traced his genealogy for a thousand years. The land was torn with the wars of the barons, and the people cried out under oppression and taxation. Today no Aquilonian noble dares maltreat the humblest of my subjects, and the taxes of the people are lighter than anywhere else in the world.
"What of you? Your brother, Amalrus, holds the eastern half of your kingdom, and defies you. And you, Strabonus, your soldiers are even now besieging castles of a dozen or more rebellious barons. The people of both your kingdoms are crushed into the earth by tyrannous taxes and levies. And you would loot mine—ha! Free my hands and I'll varnish this floor with your brains!"
One of my hottest takes for years has been THE DARK KNIGHT is a great 1 hr 45 min movie trapped in a just okay 2 hr 30 min flick, and Ledger's Joker is overrated. It's Brandon Lee from the Crow doing a Tom Waits impression, who gets away with everything because of plot armor.
I wanted to remember why I’m no fan of Heath Ledger’s Joker, so I pressed play on “The Dark Knight.”
First of all, WHAT A BLOATED MESS THIS THING IS!
And side note: Maggie Gyllenhaal isn’t hot enough to break hearts or have men fighting to date her.
Then Joker appears at the meeting with the crime lords and…
…I feel NOTHING.
Nolan’s Joker is basically TRAUMA + MAKEUP. 🤯
Sad-faced clown.
Mopes when he walks.
Mostly drones on in monotone.
No energy. No humor. No zaniness.
NO FUN.
This is NOTHING like what the name “Joker” suggests to me, after Romero and Nicholson put their stamps on the character.
And then Nolan throws out the classic chemical origin for some DEPRESSING street-level garbage about either daddy scarring him with a knife…
…or Joker cutting up his own face to look like his disfigured wife.
He took a FUN comic book story and turned it into a dour, depressing crime drama with a “superhero.”
And he took an iconic comic book villain and turned him into a guy with daddy issues, clown makeup and a story about “my scars.”
So while Ledger may have done an outstanding job…
…I just didn’t like the version he played.
Sorry for the radio silence. One of those awful months.
Anniversary of the fall of Kabul and 9/11 hitting a lot of veterans hard.
Today was number six I knew that didn't survive the month.
Dunno if hard times make great men. But they sure as hell kill them.
Silver lining, at least if Lindsay Ellis is making videos, she's not writing awful scifi erotica.
If I had a nickel every time a Hugo nominee wrote a trilogy that is essentially "The Turner Diaries written by a liberal", I'd have two nickels.
Not a lot, but it happened twice.

"The creators of the remake were really huge fans of the original—you can tell"
One of the many comforts of Breadtubers fleeing for Bluesky, being able to admit Lindsay Ellis sucks without a legion of pissy fans trying to lynch you is nice.
