“The Coup Years” Photo Exhibition marks 5 years of the struggle for democracy by the Myanmar people. It is currently on display from now until 8 February at BACC.
Four Myanmar photographers captured the various stages of the fight against military dictatorship. Only one photographer was at Bangkok Art and Culture Centre (BACC) on Tuesday where the exhibition is taking place. The photographer, Mr. Sis Min Naing, 26, was detained by the Burmese military junta for two years.
Besides gripping photos, the exhibition on the 5th Floor of BACC, which is organised by SEA-Junction @SEAJunction, also contains narratives explaining the situation from 2021-2025.
Below is part of the text displayed on the wall describing the situation last year, 2025.
“As the junta's rule dragged on, the military escalated its operations with the tacit support of foreign allies, such as China and Russia. As a result, armed clashes intensified resulting in increasing casualties and forcing civilians to flee their villages and towns. Although Internally Displaced People (IDP) camps are supposedly designated as safe zones, they became targets of frequent aerial bombings and killings carried out by military forces.
‘In late 2025, the military junta organized an election in an attempt to gain legitimacy as the government of Myanmar. The vote was widely boycotted, regarded by much of the population as a sham, and rejected by the international community. Due to ongoing resistance, voting took place only in a limited number of township, was conducted in stages, and saw high levels of absenteeism. Despite these circumstances, the people of Myanmar remain determined to continue their struggle for democracy.”
