Hatchery origin Chinook salmon that reproduce in the wild have similar relative reproductive success as wild fish, suggesting that a single generation in the wild increases the fitness of hatchery-reared salmon.

Marine Science Day!
SFGL participated in another successful MSD at @HatfieldMSC. With over 1900 visitors, we fielded lots of great questions (Dr. O'Malley & Dr. @k_olsen_ecoevo )! Can't wait for next year April 12, 2025!

Come join us Saturday April 13th 2024 for Marine Science Day at the Hatfield Marine Science Center!
@HatfieldMSC
SFGL M.S. student Ben Wiley presented the key question driving his thesis research on monitoring Bull Trout at the ORAFS annual meeting!
Environmental DNA (eDNA) is often used to evaluate presence/absence, but is it effective at quantifying relative abundance of target species??
Hot off the press! Do "half pounders" return as early-, late-summer, or winter run steelhead? SFGL and ODFW found that in Oregon's Rogue River half pounders are a mixed assemblage from all three adult runs.

New paper! Leaders in salmonid research, including SFGL’s Dr. Kathleen O’Malley, collaborate in “Implications of Large-Effect Loci for Conservation: A Review and Case Study with Pacific Salmon.” doi.org/10.1093/jhered/esab0…

Implications of Large-Effect Loci for Conservation: A Review and Case Study with Pacific Salmon. Just published in #JHered doi.org/10.1093/jhered/esab0… Freely available! By Robin Waples, @dpscruz @charrgirl @martykardos and a slew of Pacific fish folk.

ALT Adult spring Chinook salmon holding in a deep pool of the Salmon River, California on a hot summer day. Early-migrating salmon and steelhead can access prime spawning and rearing habitat not accessible to adults that migrate later. Waples et al. review new genomics data that document strong associations between adult migration timing and specific alleles at a small region of one chromosome in both Chinook salmon and steelhead.
