A new @EdWorkforceCmte report brings increased scrutiny to longstanding concerns about antisemitism within the Berkeley Unified School District. JCRC’s Adriana Lombard told @jns_org: “The erasure of Israel and Jewish historical connections to the land, minimization of the Holocaust and framing Jews as oppressors all perpetuate antisemitism. We are grateful to the Jewish families and educators in Berkeley who raised these concerns and have worked tirelessly to advocate for change. It is critically important we work together to ensure Jews are accurately represented, their identities respected and all students receive an education grounded in historical accuracy and critical thinking." JCRC mourns the passing of Charene Zalis, a beloved member of our community and documentary filmmaker who spent decades telling stories of people standing up to hate. Her work with Not In Our Town included Repairing the World: Stories from the Tree of Life, documenting Pittsburgh’s solidarity following the 2018 synagogue massacre. Our heartfelt condolences go out to her family, including JCRC Board Member Peter Yolles, and all who loved her. May her memory be a blessing.

California is now the first state to recognize Jewish identity as an ethnicity. What does that mean for our community? Jews have always been more than a religious minority. We’re a people with shared ancestry, culture, and history. Now, state law reflects that. JCRC’s @TyeGregory and Allison Barnes break down what SB 1387 changes, why being counted matters, and what you should know about choosing to self-identify. Thank you @SenHenryStern for authoring and leading this effort and @CAgovernor for signing the bill into law!

JOINT STATEMENT: Antisemitic Rhetoric in Berkeley We are deeply alarmed by the growing normalization of antisemitic and hateful rhetoric in Berkeley in the discourse surrounding the upcoming election. Tolerating language that amplifies conspiracy theories and incites hostility toward historically marginalized communities threatens the safety and well-being of all residents, not just our Jewish community. At a time of heightened polarization, elevating extremist rhetoric that deliberately sows division undermines the mutual respect and civil discourse essential to a healthy, inclusive society. Recent reporting on a “Zionist takeover” of the City Council and accusations that Bay Area Jewish institutions, representing tens of thousands of local families, are "foreign lobby groups,” are highly offensive and dangerous. Most alarmingly, a social media post by a local activist group using the term “zionazi” to describe a former council member received likes from several candidates for office. By equating Zionism with Nazism, the authors are weaponizing the Holocaust against Jews and demonizing Jewish identity and connections to Israel. Such language does nothing to advance legitimate political discourse or constructive criticism of Israeli government policies. Instead, it perpetuates antisemitic stereotypes, dehumanizes Jewish people, and contributes to an environment in which harassment has become more acceptable. History has repeatedly demonstrated the devastating consequences of allowing hateful and threatening rhetoric to go unchallenged. Words matter, particularly when amplified by individuals in positions of influence. We call on Berkeley’s civic, community, elected leaders and candidates for public office to speak out against this rhetoric and unequivocally reject antisemitism and all forms of hate. -JCRC Bay Area, Congregation Beth Israel, Congregation Netivot Shalom, JCC East Bay, @jfcseastbay, @jewishbayarea-

"In some ways, the years since the Oct. 7 attacks have felt like a second coming out: not because being Jewish is new to me, but because I’ve had to decide when and where I am willing to be fully visible as a Jew, including the parts of my Jewish identity that involve Israel." Dr. Joshua Simmons, JCRC Council member and San Francisco psychologist, reflects on Jewish identity, belonging, and the pressure he has felt since October 7 to hide parts of himself in LGBTQ+ spaces he once considered home. UPDATE: Ross Valley School District confirmed it has identified students who were responsible for the antisemitic graffiti found at Brookside Elementary over the weekend. The graffiti depicted a Star of David “versus” a swastika, with a “W” above the swastika indicating a win. Alongside the symbols was “I hate JECW,” an apparent misspelling of “Jews.” JCRC thanks Ross Valley School District and Central Marin Police for their swift response to this disturbing incident. More info: jweekly.com/2026/10/07/stude…
Such a powerful sight: dozens of San Anselmo families and community members showing up in solidarity with the Jewish community after antisemitic graffiti, including swastikas, was found at Brookside Elementary School over the weekend. At yesterday morning’s rally, elementary students from all backgrounds waved signs and stood alongside Jewish families in support. Antisemitic graffiti has become all too common across the Bay Area. JCRC condemns this incident and thanks everyone who organized and showed up yesterday. Central Marin Police are investigating the incident as a hate crime. Anyone with information should contact Central Marin Police at (415) 927-5150. More information: nixle.us/HP8RT

THREE YEARS. Three years since the moment my life changed forever. Even now, it feels so unreal that sometimes I still can’t fully comprehend that I was kidnapped and taken to Gaza. Sometimes it feels like it was all just a nightmare I somehow woke up from. But at the same time, the pain is always here. It never really leaves, and sometimes, it only gets stronger. This year, when I went to visit the graves of my friends, I felt like it had somehow become even harder. Maybe because the hostages are finally home. Maybe because I’m no longer part of that fight. Or maybe because everyone else has already graduated, moved to Tel Aviv, and started their careers. And you remain there, like a memory from another life. A life that was innocent, young, and happy. A group of friends simply enjoying life, dreaming big, with no idea how quickly everything could change. I miss you every single day. With every step I take, on every path I choose, I find myself wondering what it would be like if you were still here beside me. As more time passes, I realize that soon, more time will have passed since we lost you than the amount of time I actually had the chance to know you. And that is something I still can’t accept. To me, you are always with me. And for those of us who have lost someone we love, it isn’t easy to watch the world keep moving when some people’s lives simply stopped. It isn’t easy to live with the guilt of being the ones who are still here. But we have to keep going, because that is what they would have wanted for us. We have to learn to live alongside the pain. Embrace it. Forgive it. Understand it. But at the same time, keep looking forward. Give yourself permission to LIVE.

A heartfelt evening 💙 JCRC was proud to cosponsor @IsraelinSF's October 7 remembrance ceremony featuring firsthand testimony from Nova Music Festival survivor Rom El-Hai.
𝗢𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟳 𝗥𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 | 𝗦𝗮𝗻 𝗙𝗿𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗼 In commemoration of the third anniversary of October 7, the Consulate General of Israel in San Francisco, led by Consul General Ron Gerstenfeld, joined local community organizations and members at the Menorah Center for an evening of remembrance and solidarity. The solemn gathering remembered every life lost in the Hamas terrorist attacks on October 7, 2023—honoring the families who lost loved ones, the survivors who continue to carry the wounds of that day, and all whose lives were forever changed. In his remarks, Consul General Gerstenfeld also highlighted the extraordinary courage and resilience of Israeli society. In the aftermath of the attacks, first responders and soldiers rushed toward danger, volunteers opened their homes, and Israelis from all walks of life united to support the displaced, the wounded, the bereaved, and the families of the hostages. He underscored that, after three years, Israel continues to rebuild, heal, and look toward the future with determination and hope. On the sidelines of the event, attendees also experienced a moving exhibition by Israeli artist Melanie Gal, featuring powerful portraits and stories of October 7 survivors. Pictured delivering their speeches are Consul General Ron Gerstenfeld; Rom El-Hai, Nova festival survivor; Rabbi Shimon Margolin, and Oleg Ivanov of StandWithUs. Israel remembers. Israel honors. Israel stands together. 🎗️
