SHAC Article: “A Second Mortgage”: High Point Village Leaseholders Call for Action Over Soaring Charges shaction.org/2026/10/26/a-se… Residents are paying equivalent to a second mortgage in service charges at High Point Village. Meanwhile, Ballymore Group’s 2026 financial statement reported a doubling of its post-tax profits in the UK in 2026 to £3.7 million. People are being squeezed to the bone, and SHAC is helping to bring them together for a united fight against exploitation and profiteering. #EndServiceChargeAbuse

Media coverage of the #CovidInquiry report on care work -- like the report itself -- overlooks the disproportionate impact of pandemic failures on migrant care and domestic workers. Despite this omission, our friends and clients at @kanlunganuk @UVWunion and @IWGBunion provided deeply impactful testimony to the Inquiry. Thanks to their participation, the crucial work of some of the most marginalised members of the care sector has been made more visible. Read our full article: pilc.org.uk/post/covid-19-in…

This is a brilliant interview @PeteApps. It's a great summary that puts the housing emergency into a historical context. Without that, we're doomed to repeat the mistakes of neoliberlism.
I look a touch manic in the still for this video, but if you can get past that it was great to be invited onto @DoubleDownNews to talk about how we got into the housing mess we're in and where we're going in the future: youtube.com/watch?v=Owaq_na2…

SHAC Article: Lessons from Spain: Organising to Fight the Housing Emergency Spanish communities, tenants' & trade unions have united to strike for fair rents and a halt to unjust evictions. Spain's rising resistance offers a blueprint for what ordinary people in the UK can achieve through collective action. shaction.org/2026/10/20/less… Our hope lies in breaking down our divides and finding our collective voice under a single demand for housing justice. We can build a fairer, more compassionate future where a secure home is guaranteed for everyone.

Replying to @SHAC_Action
Exactly. I think everyone on the receiving end of regulations would like to see them better-written and targeted, but virtually all regulations have an important function. Grenfell shows that, and why better monitoring and enforcement are vital.

Using the term "red tape" is a way of implying that regulation has no positive role. In reality regulation is precisely about protecting us and our property. Cut it at your peril.
Grenfell - 72 died from the fire, at least five died by suicide, 11,000 have PTSD, concerns about long term effects of toxicity on residents, 11 firefighters with terminal cancer - plus £1bn spent and rising. That's 'nothing' right?

ROYAL TREATMENT (@PrivateEyeNews Magazine in all newsagents now) Has the Royal Borough of Greenwich splashed taxpayers’ cash on a bid to silence a resident campaigning on building safety? The Labour-controlled council’s external auditor, Forvis Mazars Group, is investigating the concerns of Steve Day, chair of the Royal Artillery Quays (RAQ) residents association, that Greenwich may have used public money for legal advice to suppress democratic criticism, and that this is unlawful. Residents have campaigned for years over fire-risk defects and dangerous cladding (Eye 1536) in the eight-block complex built in 2002 by Baratt Developments (now Barratt Redrow). Campaigners have urged Greenwich to support their claims that Barratt did not comply with building regulations during construction, arguing that although external cladding is being replaced, internal fire-safety defects also need fixing. Campaigners want Greenwich to support their demands for more comprehensive works, although it is not responsible for RAQ. The Building Safety Regulator (BSR), created after 2017’s Grenfell Tower fire, regulates building safety and developers deliver remediation work. Barratt started works last year after BSR approval, stating its commitment to remediating fire-safety issues identified in construction, without cost to leaseholders. Day’s request for an audit investigation was triggered by Greenwich sending him two formal warnings about his communication approach. The council suggested his correspondence was unreasonable and persistent and it may act to restrict his contact with officers and individual councillors. Meanwhile, Day and his fellow campaigners have high-profile support. Stephanie Barwise KC, who represented a group of victims in the Grenfell Tower Public Inquiry, criticised Greenwich in a social media post entitled “The Case for Candour: A local authority in denial about life threatening fire safety defects”. The Grenfell Tower Trust, which supports those affected by the fire, has demanded Greenwich “do the right thing” and listen to residents. The Earl of Lytton, chartered surveyor and Chartered Association of Building Engineers patron, posted to ask why “is a London Borough so keen to deny facts about a modern higher risk residential development?” Councils do not usually comment on ongoing investigations. A Greenwich spokesperson said everyone “deserves a safe, secure place to live” and reiterated that Barratt is responsible for BSR-approved remediation works. Greenwich added that it is aware of concerns, having continued to engage with “all relevant parties, including residents” and cannot comment on individual cases but highlighted its “persistent unreasonable complaints” policy published on its website. That’s the same website that outlines council staff values, promising that Greenwich “listens and learns from residents to improve results” and “prioritises residents’ needs over the Council’s convenience”. @MrOkereke @JJamiecarswell @David_Llew @tom_creswell_ @Cllrjfahy @abenaopp @mtpennycook @GideonJAmos @andyburnham

SHAC and Members in the Guardian - Awaab’s law is not working, say social housing tenants stuck in mouldy homes theguardian.com/society/2026… Thx for covering this @guardian. It's really simple. There's no point creating new laws unless you also make it possible for tenants & residents to enforce them. The fact that nothing was written in to close the enforcement gap is deliberate. It was excluded to keep the landlord lobby happy. This is why we need a #NationalHousingUnion.

A pleasure to speak at the conference on how we solve the housing emergency. The media is largely ignoring this issue which voters regularly say is top of their list of problems.
