I made a quiz to help prospective PhD students find potential mentors in criminology. It’s the newest project in my vibe-coding journey. It builds on my earlier faculty explorer dashboard. Critical feedback encouraged. Supported by @CrimConsortium

So this is an experiment -- I have been using AI to write papers I had ideas for years in the past month+. For this just as an additional test, I had GrokBot upload the paper to crimrxiv as well. (Which takes signing in and doing some edits to a few of the fields and checking the HTML -- it did a great job.)
So these are ideas I came up with. One of the critiques of surveillance cameras is they disproportionately target minority residents. Here I created an linear program to site cameras that incorporate racial fairness constraints -- so it sets the exposure minority residents have on cameras. It barely reduces the efficacy of cameras (in terms of total outdoor crimes captured within 1000 feet).
The future of writing social science papers with AI is here. It can be done in an effective and safe way. No hallucinated citations, because I gave it an outline of what to cite for example (and reviewed the citations I was unfamiliar with afterwards).
So this was an idea I had for years, and decided one morning to have AI help me write it up (I am pretty sure it took in total less than 3 hours for Opus 5.5 to churn it out). I have 9 total papers I have had AI churn out just in the past few weeks. Welcome critiques, but besides the AI writing being hamfisted (which I think will likely continue to improve with future models) this is higher quality than the majority of social science research (it has code to replicate and is a topic that actually makes sense to examine).

I’ve been thinking more about (not) publishing preprints and found a teaching analogy: Preventing cheating is important, but overemphasizing it gets in the way of learning. The same is true of not publishing preprints to prevent their misuse. I prioritize people doing good stuff.
Check out my thoughts on why it’s good to publish preprints and reviews of them (and why that’s better than conventional journal publishing). Disagree? I recommend commenting on the post below 🧡

Thanks again for the engagement and feedback. Our exec director and CrimRxiv's founder @SJacques83 has posted a reply. doi.org/10.21428/cb6ab371.78…
I have submitted a recommendation to @cjgsagsu that this policy be rolled out across department bathrooms. You can show support by liking or commenting on this post. Thank you.

Can a fruit fly brain read criminology? Mostly no. Why? Criminologists aren't making their articles open access. See for yourself at fruitfly.crimconsortium.com
If you’re already having palpable anxiety, I recommend drinking a Red Bull and cup of coffee to calm the nerves
I condemn this article in the strongest possible terms. I cannot tolerate criticism of my administrative overlords.

Today I was honored by @OpenCriminology with the Established Researcher Award sponsored by @MPICSL. Below are the brief comments I delivered during their meeting.
I look forward to seeing your future contributions to, and success in, open criminology. Do please consider CrimRxiv as an outlet for your work. Please also consider joining CrimConsortium as an individual member; it’s free. There’s a link at the top of crimconsortium.com.
Can’t believe @realDonaldTrump is pushing for the @premierleague to be renamed the American Premier League. This is getting out of hand. Though I do like the name.

For the first time we've exceeded 500,000 visitors in a 30 day period. (Last week we exceeded 400k for the first time. This summer we did SEO improvements.)
