I am so excited to share more about how our downtown is being reimagined. From the Delta Center to the Salt Palace, this new district will be a hub for entertainment, sports, arts, culture, and community, right in the heart of downtown.
Twenty-five years ago, our nation changed forever. Today, Salt Lake County, joins communities across the country in honoring the victims, the first responders, and the service members who answered the call on September 11, 2001, and the years to follow. Let us never forget.

EMERGENCY ALERT CLARIFICATION
An emergency alert for the Rocky Canyon Fire was sent to a much larger area than intended.
West Henefer Road: Under an evacuation order
Town of Henefer: READY alert — be prepared to evacuate
All other areas: You may disregard the alert
Please avoid the area and use alternate routes while emergency crews respond to the apartment fire. Thank you for giving first responders the room they need to do their work.
After a fire on the roof of an apartment building in Midvale forced residents to evacuate, Hillcrest High School opened its doors to help, and the Red Cross set up a temporary shelter inside the school.

A sincere thank you to everyone in #SaltLakeCounty who did their part this holiday weekend. As I wrote last week in the @sltrib "We will look back on this summer as the year we started new traditions, celebrated in new ways and sacrificed just a little for our neighbors and communities."
Remember fireworks are still prohibited and its going to be dry and HOT this week. Stay cool, enjoy one of Salt Lake County's 19 pools, 4 ice centers, 2 splash pads and remember, don't burn down the state.
“The Founders understood that protecting what they had built was not separate from celebrating it — it was part of the same commitment,” Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson writes in an op-ed. sltrib.com/opinion/commentar…
Help keep our communities safe this wildfire season by reporting illegal fireworks using these numbers. Only call 911 if you see a fire. Do not call 911 to report illegal fireworks unless a fire has started. Your reports to the non-emergency lines help prevent wildfires and allow emergency responders to focus on active emergencies.

I mourn the loss of three wildland firefighters who gave their lives battling the Snyder Fire near the Utah-Colorado border this weekend.
Emily Barker, 38, of Clinton Township, Michigan. Nick Hutcherson, 27, of Glendale, Arizona. Sydney Watson, 26, of Warrior, Alabama. Three heroes from three different states who came to protect our lands and our communities.
We are grateful for every man and woman who runs toward the fire so the rest of us do not have to. Our thoughts are with their families, their crews, and all who loved them. May each of us do all we can to prevent more tragedies like this through our own acts of service and to remember those who sacrifice everything to serve us.
Three firefighters died and two were injured while tackling fires on the Colorado-Utah border, the U.S. Wildland Fire Service reported Sunday. The firefighters had been part of an interagency response to the Knowles and Gore fires on Saturday.

Today is not the day to take any chances.
A PDS Red Flag Warning is in effect Friday from 9 AM to midnight for portions of the Southwest Desert, Central & Southern Mountains including the #CottonwoodFire. This is a PARTICULARLY DANGEROUS SITUATION. Gusty winds & dry conditions will lead to very rapid fire growth. #utwx
200 yards separated the Bonneville Fire from The Huntsman Cancer Institute. This burn line shows just how close the fire came—and highlights the incredible efforts that kept it from coming any closer.
To our firefighters, first responders, emergency teams, and everyone who stepped up to help: thank you. Your dedication, courage, and teamwork helped protect our community when it mattered most.
The #BonnevilleFire has increased to 84% containment. Crews will continue strengthen the lines through end of shift today and likely tomorrow to finalize containment. Thanks to incredible work from the firefighters on the ground and in the air for all their hard work.
This aerial view from Air Attack gives a good perspective of how close the fire came to the University and structures.
Salt Lake County, we do not need to put ourselves in this kind of danger. We can individually take steps to protect our valley from the threat of wildfires this summer. We are going to need to choose to celebrate in new ways this year. And importantly, we are going to need to look out for each other and know what to do if we see a fire or see someone using fireworks where the risk is just too great.
We are all in this together, so if you see fireworks being used in areas where they are banned, please report it through your local non-emergency dispatch line. Salt Lake City and Sandy residents can call 801-799-3000. For most other areas of Salt Lake County, call 801-840-4000. Only call 911 if there is an emergency. This year, authorities are taking a much stricter approach to enforcement, and a first violation carries a $1,000 fine.

Bonneville Fire Update - 9:30
Again, the fire is now 495 acres and 5% contained.
Air and ground crews made strong progress yesterday on the fire. Overnight, increased cloud cover and humidity helped moderate fire behavior, resulting in minimal activity.

Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County have filed a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in an effort to halt the unlawful decision to convert a warehouse into an immigration detention facility on the City’s west side without following federal law.
The proposed ICE facility is a dire threat to the very essence of our community values. It would overwhelm the infrastructure in the region, harm area businesses, and strain public safety and public health resources. The federal government did not notify nor consult with local officials, including myself.

Please join me in wearing orange tomorrow for National Gun Violence Awareness Day. Together, we can raise awareness, honor those whose lives have been lost to gun violence, and support efforts to build safer communities.
If you or someone you love is struggling, know that help is available—you don't have to face it alone.
I am sorry to learn of the passing of Karen Huntsman.
Karen made a mark in so many ways though a deep commitment to family and community. I appreciate her and her family’s deep commitment to advancing mental health solutions and cancer research, as primary passions. On a personal note, I will miss her kindness and grace.
